  • Beyond the ‘east–west’ dichotomy

Vivian L Vignoles, Ellinor Owe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Experimental…•2016

Markus and Kitayama's (1991) theory of independent and interdependent self-construals had a major influence on social, personality, and developmental psychology by highlighting the role of culture in psychological processes. However, research has relied excessively on contrasts between North American and East Asian samples, and commonly used self-report measures of independence and interdependence frequently fail to show predicted cultural differ…

  • Setos' way to manage identities and well-being

    Open Access•Aune Valk, Taive Särg•ARTICLE•Nationalities Papers•2015•References: 33

The paper examines how the tiny ethno-cultural group of Setos constructs its identity in the multicultural context. The study examines the validity of three acculturation models and tests earlier findings on the relationship between identity and well-being. The results suggest that Setos have clearly adopted a multicultural identity strategy while not merging different identities, and that they have managed to separate the material well-being fro…

  • Contextualism as an Important Facet of Individualism-Collectivism

    Open Access•Ellinor Owe, Vivian L Vignoles et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2013•Cited by: 11•References: 59

Beliefs about personhood are understood to be a defining feature of individualism-collectivism (I-C), but they have been insufficiently explored, given the emphasis of research on values and self-construals. We propose the construct of contextualism, referring to beliefs about the importance of context in understanding people, as a facet of cultural collectivism. A brief measure was developed and refined across 19 nations (Study 1: N = 5,241), sh…

  • Culture and the distinctiveness motive

Maja Becker, Vivian L Vignoles et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2012•Cited by: 22

The motive to attain a distinctive identity is sometimes thought to be stronger in, or even specific to, those socialized into individualistic cultures. Using data from 4,751 participants in 21 cultural groups (18 nations and 3 regions), we tested this prediction against our alternative view that culture would moderate the ways in which people achieve feelings of distinctiveness, rather than influence the strength of their motivation to do so. We…

Open Access•Aune Valk, Kristel Karu-Kletter et al.•ARTICLE•Trames Journal of the Humanities…•2011

The article reports the results of a comparative study of the relationship between the ethnic and national identity of different ethnic groups residing in Estonia. The aim of the study was to identify aspects of the Estonian national identity that are acceptable to all ethnic groups in Estonia â the Estonian Open Identity (EOI). Ethnic Estoniansâ national and ethnic identity are intertwined, supporting the majority group dominance perspective (Si…

  • About the Importance of the Meaning of Ethnic Identity

Open Access•Aune Valk, Kristel Karu•ARTICLE•Trames Journal of the Humanities…•2000

Quantitative and qualitative data from three generations of resident and emigrant Estonians showed that the meaning of ethnic identity varied considerably among people with equally strong ethnic pride and feeling of belonging. The two different groups who have lived apart for more than half a century described differently the target of their attachment, the group they belong to, the fellow ethnic group members, Estonian history, etc. The differen…

  • Ethnic Identity, Ethnic Attitudes, Self-Esteem, and Esteem toward Others among Estonian and Russian Adolescents

    Open Access•Aune Valk•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•2000•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Ethnic identity in relation to self-esteem and esteem toward others, along with attitudes toward one’s own and other ethnic groups, was examined among Estonian and Russian adolescents. Significant differences appeared across components of ethnic identity and between minority and majority groups. Positive feelings about the in-group (ethnic pride—EP) were associated with positive attitudes toward other ethnic groups among minority but not majority…
