In this qualitative study, 28 Latino social work graduate students were trained on Mindfulness Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (MCBT) through experiential learning. Orientations to Nonhuman Animal Welfare
This study employed an online survey to investigate the nonhuman animal welfare attitudes and behaviors of 104 social work students (85% female) enrolled in a Hispanic-serving university near the U.S.–Mexico border. Approximately three-fourths of the respondents were moderately or very concerned about animal welfare issues. Level of concern about animal welfare issues was significantly related to four pro-animal welfare behaviors: making one’s ya…
Environmental Beliefs and Concern about Animal Welfare
An online survey examined environmental beliefs and concern about animal welfare among 105 social work students in the U.S.- Mexico border region. Environmental beliefs were measured using items from the revised New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) Scale (Dunlap, Van Liere, Mertig, & Jones, 2000). Higher concern about animal welfare was significantly related to three dimensions of the revised NEP Scale: (1) belief in the fragility of nature's balance, (…

Seeing Ourselves in All
The concept of interconnectedness is rooted in both the science of ecology and the spiritual principle of the unity of life, which holds that the same “divine spark” of love is present in all life. By placing the welfare of the whole above self-interest, humans can live in harmony with the unity of life (Easwaran, 1989b Easwaran, E. 1989b. Original goodness, Tomales, CA: Nilgiri Press. [Google Scholar]). Two examples of interrelated harm to human…
Seeking Our Place in the Web of Life
Interest in the impact of animals on human spirituality has grown in recent decades. At the same time, however, the exploitation of animals persists throughout society. A definition of spirituality as “the process of taking our rightful place in the web of life” can guide efforts to develop a type of spirituality that enhances the well‐being of the earth and all living beings. Animals make two important contributions to human spiritual developmen…

Religion and Spirituality at the Border
A survey of 88 Mexican-American social work students reflects the growing religious diversity among U.S. Latinos/as. Forty-three percent of the students were non-Catholics, compared to 30–35% non-Catholics in the U.S. Latino/a population. Non-Catholic students in the sample were more likely to attend church frequently, and Catholic students were more likely to have consulted a Curandero/a (traditional healer). There were no differences between Ca…

Relational Spirituality and Social Caregiving
Relational spirituality suggests that strengthening one's relatedness to other people and to sources of meaning beyond self-interest produces joy and vitality, which sustain the capacity to care. This perspective informs a qualitative study of 50 female services providers and social reformers. The interviews revealed that the women's caregiving was sustained not only by efficacy or success, but also by connections to their work, to their social n…
Rights, Responsibility, and Relationship
A narrative analysis of interviews with 50 women who were working for social change as professionals or volunteers revealed three motivations for activism: (a) to ensure rights, (b) to fulfill responsibilities, and (c) to restore relationships and build community. The three motivations reflect amodified ethic of care, which includes concern for distant and unfamiliar others. The women's spirituality supports the modified care ethic by emphasizing…

Creative Apostle of Reconciliation”
This paper analyzes the spirituality and social philosophy of Emily Greene Balch (1867–1961). A winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and an advocate for oppressed groups, Balch insisted that both spiritual qualities and practical strategies are essential for constructive social change. Balch's spiritual development was affected by both her Unitarian family background and her affiliation as an adult with the Society of Friends. Her social philosophy an…

Research and Practice
Data from a national survey show that social work educators are convinced of the importance of research but that they have stronger interest and skills in teaching. Compared to those with master's degrees, faculty members with doctorates have higher levels of interest and involvement in research. The findings suggest that greater research interest and competence are needed throughout the profession to explore fully the potential of scientific res…

Achievement and Aspiration
In contrast to previous work, our study considers both meaning and mediation factors in the achievement-aspiration relationship. In a sample of graduate students ("academic-career aspirants"), we examine sex differences in the achievement- aspiration relationship as they vary with type of academic achievement and professional aspirations, and as it is mediated by individuals' perceptions of their professional roles and their faculty's support. Women, Career Orientation, and Employment

The study group is a cross-sectional, non-probability sample of 1,120 women, ages 22–64, who contacted a major mid-western university's Center for Continuing Education of Women.
