  • How Norms Depend on the Presence and Status of Observers

Open Access•B Simpson, Kimmo Eriksson et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2026

Norms are fundamental to social life, but basic questions about how they are affected by social context remain. Specifically, how do normative constraints depend on the presence and status of observers, and how do such relational contingencies vary across cultures? Using data from more than 25,000 individuals across 90 societies, we test several hypotheses linking normative constraints on everyday behaviors (like arguing, laughing, cursing, kissi…

  • Beyond Religious Narcissistic Identification

Magdalena Żemojtel-Piotrowska, Jarosław Piotrowski et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for the…•2026

Agnosticism and atheism are often grouped simply as nonreligious identities, yet emerging research highlights their distinct psychological profiles and social implications. Among these distinctions, collective narcissism – characterized by strong attachment to one’s group, exceptionalism, and grievance for recognition – offers a framework for understanding identity processes in both nonreligious groups. We examined whether agnostics and atheists …

  • Testing the underlying structure of unfounded beliefs about Covid-19 around the world

    Paweł Brzóska, Magdalena Żemojtel-Piotrowska et al.•ARTICLE•Thinking & Reasoning•2024

Unfounded—conspiracy and health—beliefs about COVID-19 have accompanied the pandemic worldwide. Here, we examined cross-nationally the structure and correlates of these beliefs with an 8-item scale, using a multigroup confirmatory factor analysis. We obtained a two-factor model of unfounded (conspiracy and health) beliefs with good internal structure (average CFI = 0.98, RMSEA = 0.05, SRMR = 0.04), but a high correlation between the two factors (…

  • Country‐level correlates of the Dark Triad traits in 49 countries

    Open Access•P K Jonason, Magdalena Żemojtel-Piotrowska et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2020

OBJECTIVES: The Dark Triad traits (i.e., narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism) capture individual differences in aversive personality to complement work on other taxonomies, such as the Big Five traits. However, the literature on the Dark Triad traits relies mostly on samples from English-speaking (i.e., Westernized) countries. We broadened the scope of this literature by sampling from a wider array of countries. METHOD: = 21.53) to examine …

  • Children’s rights in Algeria

    Open Access•Mahmoud Boussena, Habib Tiliouine•ARTICLE•Global Studies of Childhood•2015•References: 5

This article sought to analyse the implementation and promotion of children’s rights in Algeria from a historical and contextual perspective. This analysis was backed with legislative texts and research evidence. The results indicate that during the colonial era (1830–1962), no tangible policies were sought to protect the people and their children from poverty and ignorance. But the post-colonial era witnessed a beginning of interest in the statu…

Habib Tiliouine, Robert A Cummins et al.•ARTICLE•Mental Health Religion & Culture•2009

The aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between Islamic religiosity and satisfaction with a diverse range of life and health domains, in a sample of 2909 participants (1446 males, 1463 females) from Algeria. Factor analysis of the Islamic Religiosity Scale (IRS) indicates that it measures Religiosity as a multidimensional construct with two useful factors: Religious Practice and Religious Altruism. Religiosity at some level is ubiqui…
