Human diet of premodern mainland Japan
The development of the modern industrialized food production system has resulted in a homogeneous human diet worldwide. However, it is not clear whether a developed food production system led to a homogenized human diet also in ancient societies. Due to the lack of large archaeological datasets, we know little about the chronological trends and ancient circumstances of dietary homoge-nization. Here we compiled carbon and nitrogen stable isotope r…
Reconstructing a Second World War Sea Battle
USS Emmons is an American Second World War battleship of that sunk off Kouri Island in Okinawa, Japan, as a result of participating in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. It was attacked by Kamikaze Special Attack Units and became inoperable. A high-quality 3D Structure-from-Motion (SfM) model was created that served to plan diver-based investigations and record the current state of the site. Together with the war-related documents from US and Japan, …
Early modern human migration into Sulawesi and Island adaptation in Wallacea
Maritime migration and island adaptation by anatomically modern humans (AMH) are among the most significant current issues in Southeast Asian archaeology and directly related to their behavioural and technological advancement. In the center of this research hotspot are the Wallacean islands, situated between the Pleistocene landmasses of Sunda and Sahul. Two major migration routes have been suggested for the initial maritime migration from Sunda …
Taphonomic processes estimated from spatial distribution of Paleolithic human remains and their staining with iron-manganese oxides in the Shiraho-Saonetabaru Cave Site
Fluorine Content of Fossil Human Bones Excavated From the Shiraho‐saonetabaru Cave Site, Ishigaki Is., Okinawa, Japan, as a Chronological and Sedimentary Environmental Index
The improved fluorine analysis method by ion chromatography was applied to the fossil human bones excavated from the Shiraho‐Saonetabaru Cave site on Ishigaki Island, which were dated back to the Late Pleistocene. This study presents the first systematic results on individual variation of F/P ratios of fossil bones using less than 1 mg samples. In addition to the burial period, the F/P ratio was governed by the local difference in seepage water c…
Human Colonization of the Central Ryukyus (Amami and Okinawa Archipelagos), Japan
Only a small number of islands were colonized by Homo sapiens during the Pleistocene. One such island group is the Ryukyu Archipelago located between Kyushu and Taiwan. The Minotogawa Fissure site, located on the island of Okinawa in the Ryukyu Archipelago, is known for well-preserved late Pleistocene Homo sapiens fossil remains that were unearthed in the 1960s. In addition, eight Paleolithic sites and four other possible ones have been identifie…
Assessment and Significance of a World War II battle site
The USS Emmons, a 106m US Navy Gleaves-class destroyer minesweeper that sank in 40m of water off Okinawa Island, Japan after kamikaze attack in 1945, is used as a case study for examining the history, multivocal significance, and heritage management of a World War II naval battle site. A baseline record of the site was made using an innovative method incorporating precise control points obtained from high-resolution multibeam echosounding bathyme…
D Digital reconstruction, preliminary morphometric analysis, and facial approximation of Shiraho 4 skull
Early Metal Age interactions in Island Southeast Asia and Oceania
New evidence from the rockshelter site of Aru Manara, on the island of Morotai, in the northern Moluccas, East Indonesia, suggests an earlier than previously assumed date for extensive interactions between this area of Southeast Asia and the wider Pacific. Shared mortuary customs and associated ceramic grave goods, along with other practices such as megalithic traditions, appear to start in the Late Neolithic, but become more widespread and conso…
Discovery of Iron Grapnel Anchors in Early Modern Ryukyu and Management of Underwater Cultural Heritage in Okinawa, Japan
The Yarabuoki underwater site contains seven iron grapnel anchors and Early Modern Okinawan ceramic jars and is dated to the 16th–19th centuries. The site lies at a depth of 12–32 m off the western coast of Ishigaki Island in Okinawa, Japan. Based on underwater archaeological and broadband multibeam surveys, as well as historical research of the artefacts and Early Modern Ryukyuan shipping, we discuss the possible anchor and vessel types in Ryuky…
Human use of marine shells from Late Pleistocene layers of Sakitari-do cave site, Nanjo city, Okinawa prefecture
