  • The Body Acceptance by Others Scale-2

Open Access•Christophe Maïano, Viren Swami et al.•ARTICLE•Body Image•2026

The 13-item Body Acceptance by Others Scale-2 (BAOS-2) is an instrument designed to measure generalised perceptions of body acceptance by others. Here, we examined the psychometric properties of a novel French translation of the BAOS-2. A total of 763 French-speaking adults from Canada were asked to complete the BAOS-2, alongside additional validated measures of positive body image, psychological well-being, and eating patterns. Exploratory facto…

The 7-item Functionality Appreciation Scale (FAS) is a widely used instrument to assess functionality appreciation, a central facet of positive body image. Here, we examined the psychometric properties of a novel French translation of the FAS. French-speaking Canadian adults were asked to complete the FAS and validated measures of positive body image, psychological well-being, and eating patterns. In a first split-half subsample ( n = 385), explo…

  • The Breast Appreciation Scale

Open Access•Christophe Maïano, Viren Swami et al.•ARTICLE•Body Image•2026

Scholars are increasingly focused on women’s positive, embodied “breasted experienced”, which includes breast appreciation. This positive body image facet is assessed using the 9-item Breast Appreciation Scale (BrAS; Swami et al., 2022), but assessments of its psychometric properties in diverse cultural communities are limited. Here, we report on the translation and validation of a French translation of the BrAS in French-Canadian women. A sample…

Open Access•Violeta Enea, Christophe Maïano et al.•ARTICLE•Current Psychology•2026

The 21-item Compensatory Eating and Behaviors in Response to Alcohol Consumption Scale (CEBRACS) is the most widely used instrument for the assessment of food and alcohol disturbance. In the present study, we examined the psychometric properties of a novel Romanian translation of the CEBRACS in two studies. In Study 1 with 1,022 Romanian university students, exploratory factor analysis and parallel analysis indicated that our data reduced to thre…

  • Relation between orthorexia nervosa and healthy orthorexia

Open Access•Camille Boutin, Christophe Maïano et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 52

Orthorexic eating behaviors can be conceptualized as a bidimensional construct encompassing an orthorexia nervosa dimension (ON) and a healthy orthorexia dimension (HO). Although variable-centered studies showed that ON and HO are distinguishable orthorexic eating behaviors , the evidence of whether they can co-occur or be distinct in subgroups of individuals is still limited. The present study aimed to address previous person-centered studies' l…

Objective This study examined the utility of a biopsychosocial model to explain both higher body mass index (BMI) and disordered eating. The study was designed to examine the predictors of higher BMI and a number of measures of disordered eating (dietary restraint, drive for muscularity, drive for thinness, binge eating, and compensatory behaviour).Method Young adults (N = 838) recruited from seven countries, grouped into four regions (Europe, No…

This short note reports the eighteenth-century account of Mademoiselle Lapaneterie, a French woman who started drinking vinegar to lose weight and died one month later. The case, which was first published by Pierre Desault in 1733, has not yet been reported by present-day behavioural scholars. Similar reports about cases in 1776 are also presented, confirming that some women were using vinegar for weight loss. Those cases can be conceived as a le…

  • Development and initial validation of Sport Experiences Questionnaire (SEQ)

Maxime Luiggi, Christophe Maïano et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Leisure Research•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 6

To understand sport participation, multiple scales exist to examine why people participate. However, no questionnaires have been devised to assess what sport experiences people declare most pleasurable. This study aimed to develop and provide initial validation of a scale measuring adolescent athletes’ retrospective reports of pleasure in three modern sports experiences: competition, progress, and risk taking. The first study examined the validit…

The self-equilibrium hypothesis underlines the importance of having a strong core self, which is defined as a high and developmentally stable self-concept. This study tested this hypothesis in relation to body image (BI) trajectories in a sample of 1,006 adolescents (M age = 12.6, including 541 males and 465 females) across a 4-year period. The results supported the self-equilibrium hypothesis among 3 profiles of adolescents, all characterized by…

The current study draws on the technology acceptance model (TAM) to understand the role of men…

  • General Growth Mixture Analysis of Adolescents' Developmental Trajectories of Anxiety

Alexandre J S Morin, Christophe Maïano et al.•ARTICLE•Structural Equation Modeling: A…•2011

Substantively, this study investigates potential heterogeneity in the developmental trajectories of anxiety in adolescence. Methodologically, this study demonstrates the usefulness of general growth mixture analysis (GGMA) in addressing these issues and illustrates the impact of untested invariance assumptions on substantive interpretations. This study relied on data from the Montreal Adolescent Depression Development Project (MADDP), a 4-year fo…

  • The Longitudinal Interplay of Adolescents' Self-Esteem and Body Image

Alexandre J S Morin, Christophe Maïano et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2011

Self-esteem and body image are central to coping successfully with the developmental challenges of adolescence. However, the current knowledge surrounding self-esteem and body image is fraught with controversy. This study attempts to clarify some of them by addressing three questions: (1) Are the intraindividual developmental trajectories of self-esteem and body image stable across adolescence? (2) What is the direction of the relations between b…
