A Modern Metrical Baseline for Sexing Sheep Horn‐Cores
Sex determination is essential for reconstructing past livestock management, yet the limited skeletal sexual dimorphism of sheep hinders the identification of ewes, rams, and wethers in archaeological assemblages. Horn‐cores are the most sexually dimorphic element of the sheep skeleton, and here, we establish a new metrical baseline for differentiating these groups. This was created using three measurements—basal circumference, maximum basal diam…
Examining disparities in the accessibility of unhealthy food vendors in school neighbourhoods across Ontario
Tracking 4000 years of raptor diets through isotope analysis reveals urban scavenging with implications for conservation
Factors affecting psychological commitment and loyalty to parks and other forms of protected areas in Canada
We use a model of psychological commitment to better understand the diverse motivations that enhance behavioural loyalty to parks and protected areas. Psychological commitment reflects the degree to which an individual identifies with, wants to learn about, and chooses freely to engage with a particular phenomenon, and these factors, in turn, lead to greater loyalty and resistance to alternatives. With data collected from 634 park visitors in Alb…
Redefining the timing and circumstances of the chicken's introduction to Europe and north-west Africa
Little is known about the early history of the chicken ( Gallus gallus domesticus ), including the timing and circumstances of its introduction into new cultural environments. To evaluate its spatio-temporal spread across Eurasia and north-west Africa, the authors radiocarbon dated 23 chicken bones from presumed early contexts. Three-quarters returned dates later than those suggested by stratigraphy, indicating the importance of direct dating. Th…
Production of parchment legal deeds in England, 1690-1830
Biomolecular analysis of historical parchment legal documents is providing new insight into their production and use. Successful interpretation of this data is dependent on understanding if the location and date written on the document accurately reflect where the animal from which the parchment was produced was raised and when it died. Our analysis reveals that the location the deed concerns, or that of the stationer through whom it was sold, ty…
Measuring the impact of parchment production on skin collagen stable isotope (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) values
Parchment is one of the most abundant resources in archives across the world and is a unique time-sensitive material through which centuries of livestock economies, trade and craft can be explored. We examine the impact of structural and chemical modifications during production to δ13C and δ15N values in the skin, particularly the removal of cutaneous keratins and lipids and the conversion of amide functional groups into carboxyl groups via alkal…
Analyzing differences between spatial exposure estimation methods
Estimating the age of domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticusL. 1758) cockerels through spur development
Determining the age of bird remains after the cessation of growth is challenging due to the absence of techniques such as tooth eruption and wear available for mammals. Without these techniques, it is difficult to reconstruct hunting strategies, husbandry regimes, and wider human-animal relationships. This paper presents a new method, developed from a collection (n = 71) of known-age specimens of domestic fowl (Gallus gallus domesticusL. 1758), f…

Multidisciplinary investigations of the diets of two post-medieval populations from London using stable isotopes and microdebris analysis
Ring depressions in cattle horncores as indicators of traction use – a cautionary note
