  • Access to transition-related health care among transmasculine people in India

Open Access•Venkatesan Chakrapani, Heather Santos et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2024

Little research has examined the health care experiences of transmasculine people in India, where government initiatives to improve access to transition-related (also called gender-affirmative) care have recently been announced. We draw on data from ‘ Our Health Matters’, a mixed-methods community-based participatory research project, to characterize the transition-related care experiences of transmasculine people in India. Peer researchers condu…

  • Association of traditional marital practices with contraceptive decision-making, couple communication, and method use among couples in rural Maharashtra, India

    Open Access•Anvita Dixit, Nicole E Johns et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2023

In India, traditional social practices around marriage, such as non-involvement of prospective brides in choice of partner and timing of marriage, child/early marriage, dowry and purdah , compromise women's agency at the time of marriage and may also affect contraceptive practices in marriage. This paper examines the associations between traditional marital practices and contraceptive behaviours, including women's control over contraceptive decis…

  • Associations between Contraceptive Decision‐Making and Marital Contraceptive Communication and use in Rural Maharashtra, India

Open Access•Melody Nazarbegian, Sarah Averbach et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 50

Women's contraceptive decision‐making control is crucial for reproductive autonomy, but research largely relies on the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) measure which asks who is involved with decision‐making. In India, this typically assesses joint decision‐making or male engagement. Newer measures emphasize female agency. We examined three measures of contraceptive decision‐making, the DHS and two agency‐focused measures, to assess their asso…

    Open Access•Paul J Fleming, Jay G Silverman et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 30

We assess the effect of CHARM, a gender equity and family planning counseling intervention for husbands in rural India, on men's gender ideology. We used a two‐armed cluster randomized control trial design and collected survey data from husbands (n=1081) at baseline, 9 months, and 18 months. We used a continuous measure of support for gender equity and a dichotomous measure of equitable attitudes toward women's role in household decision‐making. …

Open Access•Pralip Kumar Narzary, Battala Madhusudana et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Asian and African…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Reliance on traditional methods of birth control causes psychological tension in couples because the fear of unwanted pregnancy bars them from experiencing a healthy sexual life. However, in Assam, half of all contraceptive users depend on traditional methods of birth control. The current study used National Family Health Survey 2005-2006 data. Out of 3840 sample women in the age group 15-49 years, 1286 women are filtered for the present study. M…

Open Access•Suvakanta Swain, Suvakanta N Swain et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2011

The pervasiveness of violence and its association with reproductive health and HIV risk highlights that the abuse in general is an important determinant for reproductive health risks; and sexual violence is significantly associated with HIV risks among those who experienced violence. Existing community mobilization programs that have primarily focused on empowering FSWs should broaden their efforts to promote reproductive health in addition to th…
