  • Temporal trends, regional variation and socio-economic differences in height, BMI and body proportions among German conscripts, 1956–2010

Open Access•Andreas Lehmann, Joël Floris et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2017

Objective We analyse temporal trends and regional variation among the most recent available anthropometric data from German conscription in the years 2008–2010 and their historical contextualization since 1956. Design/setting/subjects The overall sample included German conscripts ( N 13 857 313) from 1956 to 2010. Results German conscripts changed from growing in height to growing in breadth. Over the analysed 54 years, average height of 19-year-…

  • From left-skewness to symmetry

Open Access•Kaspar Staub, Joël Floris et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•2014

The relatively strong left-skewness during the late 19th and early 20th centuries may have been due to the interaction of a number of causes, chiefly malnutrition, a wider range in physical development at age 19 and widespread iodine deficiency

  • Income Inequality amongst Swiss Primary School Teachers in the Late 19th Century

Open Access•Joël Floris, Ulrich Woitek et al.•ARTICLE•Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte…•2013

We examine the distribution of income across Swiss primary school teachers at the end of the 19th century. To assess income differences we use a detailed data set on the income of 14,000 Swiss primary school teachers in 1881 and 1894/95. In addition, we use annually aggregated test scores from pedagogical examinations at recruitment, to test for the impact of inequality on conscripts’ performance. Our results show that between-group inequality am…

  • Variability of height, weight, and body mass index in a Swiss armed forces 2005 census

    Open Access•Frank Rühli, F J Rühli et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 30

The influence of the environment and genetics on individual biological characteristics, such as body mass and stature is well known. Many studies of these relationships have been based on conscript data. These studies often suffer from the fact that their data cover only a part of the population. Characterized by prosperity, democratic stability and enormous micro‐regional cultural diversity, Switzerland is in the unique situation of offering dat…

  • Paleopathologies of the Vertebral Column in Medieval Skeletons

Maria Ines Hofmann, Thomas Böni et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologischer Anzeiger•2008•Cited by: 4

Paleopathological data provide valuable information about health, longevity and mortality in earlier human populations. We investigated the incidence of spinal pathologies on 54 individuals (1045 vertebrae and 18 sacral bones) that belong to a medieval skeletal series discovered in the Dalheim monastery (Northwest Germany) and compared them with contemporary and recent populations. The skeletons were analyzed with anthropological methods (sex and…

  • Does Conservatism Matter? A Time‐Series Approach to Central Bank Behaviour

    Open Access•Helge Berger, Ulrich Woitek•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2005•Cited by: 9•References: 33

Empirical studies crediting 'independent and conservative central banks' with lowering inflation and inflation volatility have been criticised for their focus on policy outcomes instead of policies, and for their unsystematic conflation of independence and conservatism. We present results from time-series models for the German Bundesbank that avoid these shortfalls. Conservatism matters in the following sense: ("i" ) more conservative Bundesbank …
