  • Calling Time on Oronsay

    Open Access•N Finlay, Ruby Cerón-Carrasco et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 54

For over 120 years, the shell middens of western Scotland and the series of open-air sites on Oronsay have been the focus of debate in European Mesolithic studies. This paper challenges the significance of Oronsay in light of results from the geophysical survey and test-excavation of a new limpet and periwinkle shell midden dated to the late 5th or start of the 4th millennium cal bc at Port Lobh, Colonsay that offers fresh evidence to re-evaluate…

  • Volcanic ash layers illuminate the resilience of Neanderthals and early modern humans to natural hazards

Open Access•J J Lowe, John Lowe et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2012

Marked changes in human dispersal and development during the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition have been attributed to massive volcanic eruption and/or severe climatic deterioration. We test this concept using records of volcanic ash layers of the Campanian Ignimbrite eruption dated to ca. 40,000 y ago (40 ka B.P.). The distribution of the Campanian Ignimbrite has been enhanced by the discovery of cryptotephra deposits (volcanic ash layers t…

  • Multiproxy Analyses of Stratigraphy and Palaeoenvironment of the Late Palaeolithic Grabow Floodplain Site, Northern Germany

Open Access•Johann Friedrich Tolksdorf, Falko Turner et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 13

Changing river courses and fluctuations of the water table were some of the most fundamental environmental changes that humans faced during the Late Glacial, particularly as these changes affected areas intensively used for settlement and resource exploitation. Unfortunately, only a few stratigraphies have been documented in the North European plain that show the interaction between river development, vegetation history, and occupation by Late Pa…

  • Excavations at a Neolithic Enclosure on The Peak, near Birdlip, Gloucestershire

Open Access•Timothy Darvill, Alex Bayli et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 48

Surveys and excavations in 1980–1 confirmed Peak Camp as a Neolithic enclosure on a flat promontory of the Cotswold escarpment overlooking the Severn Valley just 1 km south of Crickley Hill. Although heavily eroded by quarrying the site can be reconstructed as having two concentric arcs of boundary earthworks forming an oval plan which was probably open to the north where a steep natural slope defined the edge of the site. A section through the o…

  • Excavation of an Iron Age, Early Historic and medieval settlement and metalworking site at Eilean Olabhat, North Uist

Ian Armit, Ewan Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Society of…•2009•Cited by: 3

The promontory site of Eilean Olabhat, North Uist was excavated between 1986 and 1990 as part ofthe Loch Olabhat Research Project. It was shown to be a complex enclosed settlement and industrialsite with several distinct episodes of occupation. The earliest remains comprise a small Iron Agebuilding dating to the middle centuries of the first millennium BC, which was modified on severaloccasions prior to its abandonment. Much later, the Early Hist…

  • An Ecological Context for the Post-Roman Archaeology of the Somerset Moors (South West England, UK)

    Open Access•Rupert A Housley, Vanessa Straker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Wetland Archaeology•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 3

In contrast to the widely reported research into the wetland prehistory of the Somerset Moors and Levels, the wetland archaeology for the historic periods of this region of south west England has always been less well known, being reliant on mostly non-wetland sources of information, e.g. documentary evidence, cartographic studies and inferences made from dry land archaeological sites. This study attempts to correct this imbalance by outlining pa…

  • Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of coastal aeolian sand accumulation in Sanday, Orkney Islands, Scotland

    Open Access•Anne Sommerville, A A Sommerville et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 16

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of sand has been used to identify periods of enhanced aeolian activity at two coastal archaeological sites in Orkney that coincide with periods of Holocene climatic deterioration recorded elsewhere in both Scotland and W Europe. Areas of Tofts Ness, Sanday were settled from the Neolithic, abandoned in the late Neolithic/early Bronze Age, reoccupied and permanently abandoned in the Iron Age. Sand laye…

  • That Sinking Feeling

    Open Access•Rupert A Housley, A J Ammerman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Wetland Archaeology•2004•Cited by: 3

It is well known that Venice has always had an intimate association with the sea. Despite the historical interest the origins of the city have, until relatively recently, remained cloaked in obscurity. Until the mid-1980s Venice remained one of the few major historical cities in Europe where urban archaeology had yet to uncover significant information. Over the last two decades the situation has changed as shown by fifteen sites with early levels…

  • Sea-level change and the archaeology of early Venice

    Open Access•A J Ammerman, Charles E McClennen et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1999•Cited by: 7•References: 6

The threatened city of Venice, plauged by rising sea levels and subsiding ground, has been the subject of recent archaeological investigation. Studies of buried archaeological sites yield new evidence on trends in sea-level change for the Lagoon of Venice and provide important insight into how early habitation responded to such change

  • The Lowland Maya “Protoclassic

    Open Access•James E Brady, Joseph W Ball et al.•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•1998•Cited by: 24•References: 12

The term “Protoclassic,” employed regularly but inexplicitly in the literature of lowland Maya archaeology, has become increasingly nebulous and ambiguous in both meaning and usage. This paper reviews the history and use of the term and presents a formal redefinition of the Protoclassic as a ceramic stage based explicitly and exclusively on ceramic criteria. Some suggestions regarding future use of the term also are offered. The paper further add…

  • Radiocarbon dating of a recent high latitude peat profile

    Open Access•Frank Oldfield, Roy Thompson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1997•Cited by: 18•References: 3

The value of both high-precision (HP) and AMS 14 C determinations in the fine-resolution dating of recent peat at Stor Åmyrân, near Umeå, northern Sweden has been explored. A detailed chronology of accumu lation, based on 14 C, an occurrence of the Askja AD 1875 tephra and 241 Am measurements has been derived for the last 700 years. This shows significant changes in the mass balance of the peat profile, with minimum rates of net carbon sequestrat…

  • Radiocarbon evidence for the Lateglacial Human Recolonisation of Northern Europe

    Open Access•Rupert A Housley, C Gamble et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1997•Cited by: 141•References: 18

This paper examines, through the use of Accelerator Mass Spectrometry dating, the database of Lateglacial cultures involved in the recolonisation of northern Europe. The aim is not only to determine the timing of that recolonisation, but also to propose a general model of hunter-gatherer colonisation at a sub-continental scale. The question is addressed of how long the period of abandonment of northern Europe during the Würm/Weichsel glaciation m…

Three years ago, ANTIQUITY reported a first archaeological insight into the origins of Venice. The city's historical records, famously good and full for its flourishing, say very little about the beginnings. This second report includes direct evidence from Piazza San Marco, the heart of the city
