  • Economic evaluation of an implementation intervention to increase outdoor free play in early childhood education

Open Access•Alice Grady, Alice Chen Grady et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2026

Get Outside Get Active (GOGA) is a multi-component implementation strategy (six strategies) to increase the provision of outdoor free play opportunities in early childhood education and care (ECEC). A randomized controlled trial with 84 ECECs within New South Wales, Australia found an increase of 61 min of outdoor free play opportunities per day, per service in the intervention compared with usual care at 6-months follow-up (P = .041). This study…

  • Evaluating the perceived outcome and impact of an integrated knowledge translation approach in the development of an equity reporting guideline

Open Access•Jessica Brown, Omar Dewidar et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Integrated knowledge translation (IKT) involves active engagement of knowledge users in co-producing research, ensuring their perspectives shape study design, analysis, and reporting. This can strengthen justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) considerations. We adopted an IKT approach in developing STROBE-Equity, an equity-focused reporting guidelin extension. The perceived value of embedding JEDI principles in reporting guideline devel…

    Open Access•Rebecca Wyse, Tara Clinton-McHarg et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2026

Objective: Behavioural interventions can be delivered via online school canteens to improve healthy purchasing for students. However, no evaluations of the cost or cost effectiveness of online canteen interventions have been conducted. The objective was to conduct a cost and cost effectiveness analysis of implementing an online school canteen intervention to improve healthy purchasing. Setting: The ‘Click & Crunch’ cluster randomised controlled t…

  • Taking stock

Open Access•Karen Lee, Philayrath Phongsavan et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2025

The complexity of research translation is well recognized. Efforts to accelerate the process have emerged through implementation science, scale-up, scalability, and sustainability. This area of research is now inundated with a plethora of new concepts, creating overlap and confusion for those working in public health, implementation science, and scale-up as well as those seeking to understand it. This perspective examines the commonly used proces…

Open Access•Carly Gardner, Cassandra Lane et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2025•References: 4

This study deepens our understanding of the potential health and wellbeing benefits a daily sport uniform policy may have and highlights barriers such as traditions persist in school settings. Policy sustainment may require considered implementation support and consulting students in uniform designs and options

  • Advancing the Speed and Science of Implementation Using Mixed-Methods Process Mapping - Best Practice Recommendations

Open Access•Natalie Taylor, Carolyn Mazariego et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•References: 57

Mixed-methods process mapping is a visualisation tool that identifies the steps, resources and personnel required to deliver a clinical practice, and has been previously used in an ad hoc manner to develop effective implementation strategies and solutions. To realise the potential of mixed-methods process mapping as an implementation tool, we aimed to develop and formalize the methodological steps and provide guidance for contemporary best practi…

  • Unpacking the cost of the lunchbox for Australian families

    Open Access•Alexandra C Manson, Brittany J Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2024

Ninety per cent of Australian school children bring a home-packed lunch to school, with 44% of the food consumed during school hours being unhealthy. Among other factors, cost is a key consideration for food provision; however, the costs to Australian families are not well understood. Therefore, we aimed to determine what families are currently paying for school lunchboxes in Australian primary schools and to examine associations between food cos…

  • Real-world public health interventions demonstrate how research evidence informs program scale-up

Open Access•Melanie Crane, Karen Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2024

Evidence-based population interventions rely on intervention testing (efficacy and effectiveness trials) to determine what works to improve public health. We investigated the characteristics of real-world public health interventions to address obesity and explored the extent to which research testing was undertaken prior to scale-up. We identified 90 population health interventions targeting physical activity, nutrition or obesity-related health …

Open Access•Courtney Barnes, Jannah Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Introduction: An important impediment to the large-scale adoption of evidence-based school nutrition interventions is the lack of evidence on effective strategies to implement them. This paper describes the protocol for a "Collaborative Network Trial" to support the simultaneous testing of different strategies undertaken by New South Wales Local Health Districts to facilitate the adoption of an effective school-based healthy lunchbox program ('SW…

Open Access•L Oakes, Luke Wolfenden et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

Participants believed that parents with SMI experience complex parenting challenges over and above other parents, describing a largely detrimental impact on the child. Support services were deemed inadequate, and participants stressed the need to develop specialist services tailored toward the needs of parents with SMI and their children. Although participants endorsed joined up working across health and social care settings to facilitate a whole…

  • Development and Application of the Scale-Up Reflection Guide (SRG)

Open Access•Karen Lee, Melanie Crane et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Scaling up effective interventions in public health is complex and comprehensive, and published accounts of the scale-up process are scarce. Key aspects of the scale-up experience need to be more comprehensively captured. This study describes the development of a guide for reflecting on and documenting the scale-up of public health interventions, to increase the depth of practice-based information of scaling up. Reviews of relevant scale-up frame…

  • Assessing the scalability of healthy eating interventions within the early childhood education and care setting

Open Access•Alice Grady, Jacklyn Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2023

Objective: Early childhood education and care (ECEC) is a recommended setting for the delivery of health eating interventions ‘at scale’ (i.e. to large numbers of childcare services) to improve child public health nutrition. Appraisal of the ‘scalability’ (suitability for delivery at scale) of interventions is recommended to guide public health decision-making. This study describes the extent to which factors required to assess scalability are re…

Open Access•Tessa Delaney, Jacklyn Jackson et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•2023•References: 23

School canteens are a recommended setting to deliver public health nutrition strategies given their wide reach, and frequent use by children. Online canteens, where users (i.e. students or their carers) pre-order and pay for food and drinks online, represent attractive systems to deliver strategies that encourage healthier food choices. There have been few studies exploring the efficacy of public health nutrition interventions in online food orde…

  • The Triple P Positive Parenting Program for Parents With Psychosis

Open Access•Luke Wolfenden, Lauren Wolfenden et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Although many people with psychosis are parents, managing the dual demands of poor mental health and parenting can be stressful and may contribute to poorer outcomes for both parent and child. Parenting interventions have the potential to improve outcomes for the whole family but need evaluation of feasibility in this context. The Triple-P Self-Help Workbook was implemented with guidance and support with 10 parents experiencing psychosis in a mul…

Open Access•Julia Dray, Lauren Gibson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

People living with mental health conditions experience a significantly reduced life expectancy compared to people without, largely linked to health risk behaviours and associated chronic disease. Community managed organisations (CMOs) represent an important setting in which to address health risk behaviours among people with mental health conditions. However, little is known about how these behaviours (smoking, poor nutrition, alcohol consumption…
