Converging perspectives on the processes exacerbating adolescent obesity
Adolescent obesity is a complex public health challenge with steadily increasing and variable prevalence among countries. This paper synthesises the driving feedback mechanisms of adolescent obesity studied in the CO-CREATE project, furthering our understanding of the complexity of this issue. Using systems thinking principles and causal loop diagramming, we integrated the following knowledge and perspectives derived from diverse sources into a c…
Integrating distributive justice in system dynamics models of sustainability transitions
Social‐ecological‐technological transitions for decarbonisation and sustainable development goals can perpetuate or introduce environmental and socio‐economic injustices. The just transitions literature provides useful perspectives for assessing transition pathways. This paper explores integrating distributive justice into system dynamics modelling for sustainability transitions. For this purpose, we adapt existing requirements to enable the eval…
Overcoming collapse of farming systems
Farming systems in Europe are perceived by stakeholders as having a low level of resilience and sustainability when confronted with shocks and ongoing stresses. Specifically, European extensive livestock systems are faced with challenges such as low farm income, uncertain policies, and changing meat consumption patterns, which are causing these systems to decline. Focused on the extensive sheep farming system in Huesca (Spain), our aim with this …
Norwegian low-intensity ovine and bovine farming systems—a resilience perspective
The concept of socio-ecological resilience can be used to understand and measure to what degree farming systems are able to handle and adapt to disturbances. The article is based on the application of a framework for resilience assessment in European farming systems to the Norwegian low-intensity ovine and bovine farming systems. The aim is to identify the characteristics of farming systems and important trends in them. Interviews held at county …

Climate change adaptation processes seen through a resilience lens
Climate change and more frequent extreme weather events are expected to significantly challenge food production and food security worldwide, underlining the need for adaptation within the agricultural sector. Although Norway, as other Nordic countries, potentially benefits from higher temperatures in terms of agricultural production, adaptation will be necessary. Employing resilience as a theoretical lens, this study investigates Norwegian farmer…
Addressing the resilience of tomato farmers in Ghana facing a double exposure from climate and market
Ghanaian tomato farmers are severely impacted by changing climate and related more frequent and extreme weather events such as drought and heavy rainfall. Furthermore, tomato production represents one of the main sources of income for these farmers, which leaves them highly exposed to market price variations. However, the full impact of changing climate and price variations for these farmers has not been assessed. Here, we examined how Ghanaian t…
Sustainable and healthy diets
Food systems have increasingly strong impacts on the environment, and they influence our human well‐being. In Switzerland, food consumption accounts for one‐third of the environmental impact caused by total final consumption. At the same time, non‐communicable diseases have been linked to a number of dietary aspects. In Switzerland, all non‐communicable diseases together are responsible for 80% of total public health care costs annually. Current …

A framework to assess the resilience of farming systems
Agricultural systems in Europe face accumulating economic, ecological and societal challenges, raising concerns about their resilience to shocks and stresses. These resilience issues need to be addressed with a focus on the regional context in which farming systems operate because farms, farmers' organizations, service suppliers and supply chain actors are embedded in local environments and functions of agriculture . We define resilience of a far…
Investigating the drivers of innovation diffusion in a low income country context. The case of adoption of improved maize seed in Malawi
Food system resilience
A system dynamics approach for examining mechanisms and pathways of food supply vulnerability
