The Concept of Validity.
This article advances a simple conception of test validity: A test is valid for measuring an attribute if (a) the attribute exists and (b) variations in the attribute causally produce variation in the measurement outcomes. This conception is shown to diverge from current validity theory in several respects. In particular, the emphasis in the proposed conception is on ontology, reference, and causality, whereas current validity theory focuses on e…
Why Psychometrics is Not Pathological
This paper comments on an article by Michell (2000), who argues that psychometrics should be qualified as pathological science for two reasons: (a) psychometrics assumes psychological attributes to be quantitative without testing this hypothesis; and (b) the fact that this hypothesis is not tested is disguised. Michell further argues that the hypothesis should be tested using additive conjoint measurement theory. Although relevant to classical te…
The theoretical status of latent variables.
This article examines the theoretical status of latent variables as used in modern test theory models. First, it is argued that a consistent interpretation of such models requires a realist ontology for latent variables. Second, the relation between latent variables and their indicators is discussed. It is maintained that this relation can be interpreted as a causal one but that in measurement models for interindividual differences the relation d…

Prenatal Exposure to Anticonvulsants and Psychosexual Development
Relation between the longitudinal development of lipoprotein levels and biological parameters during adolescence and young adulthood in Amsterdam, The Netherlands
STUDY OBJECTIVES: To analyse the relation between the longitudinal development of total serum cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), and the TC/ HDL ratio and the longitudinal development of the biological parameters body fatness (SSF), lean body mass (LBM), and cardiopulmonary fitness (VO2-max). The relations were analysed with generalised estimating equations (GEE). SETTING: The relations were investigated with data from …
The Influence of Data Collection Method on Structural Models
In survey data, four potential sources of measurement error can jeopardize the results: the respondents, the interviewers, the questions, and the data collection method. In the past two decades, a shift has occurred in the way survey data are collected; telephone surveys and, to a lesser degree, mail surveys are now more extensively used. This has stimulated empirical research on the influence of the data collection method on data quality. Most o…
A Unidimensional Latent Trait Model for Continuous Item Responses
A general linear latent trait model for continuous item responses is described. The special unidimensional case for continuous item responses is Joreskog's (1971) model of congeneric item responses. In the context of the unidimensional case model for continuous item responses the concepts of item and test information functions, specific objectivity, item bias, and reliability are discussed; also the application of the model to test construction i…
Generalized linear item response theory
In this article generalized linear item response theory is discussed, which is based on the following assumptions: (a) A distribution of the responses occurs according to a given item format; (b) the item responses are explained by one continuous or nominal latent variable and p latent as well as observed variables that are continuous or nominal; (c) the responses to the different items of a test are independently distributed given the values oft…

A Note On Specifying Parameter Values For Testing Covariance Matrix Hypotheses
Eiting and Mellenbergh (1980) used Monte Carlo studies to investigate the power in testing covariance matrix hypotheses. Although their reasoning for specifying the common variance in the Monte Carlo study may have been incorrect, the results of a second Monte Carlo study appear to be realistic. It is recommended that simulations be based on empirical estimates of parameter values
Guilford's Facet Theory Of Intelligence
A general linear model was described for tests constructed in a facet design. Guilford's structure of intellect model and an alternative model were specified as special cases. From the Guilford research seven data sets were selected such that both models could be compared. The comparison was done with oblique and orthogonal factors. Using covariance structure analysis the fit of the models was assessed, and the parameters estimated. Models with o…
Testing Covariance Matrix Hypotheses
In using tests of statistical significance, the null hypothesis will almost certainly be rejected if there is a large number of subjects. This statement also applies to the testing of hypotheses about covariance matrices. The problem can be solved within a decision theoretic framework of hypothesis testing using Monte Carlo procedures. The covariance structure of theoretical interest is specified in the alternative hypothesis, while the null hypo…

Agreement Between Raters
In this paper Jöreskog's model of congeneric tests is used to analyze agreement between raters. Raters are treated as measuring instruments. The model of congeneric tests, of which classical prallelism and tau-equivalence are shown to be special cases, is applied to teachers' ratings of students' responses on open-end questions. The findings suggest that the ratings are tau-equivalent and that the ratings given by the teachers are reliable
