Nueva Cadiz Glass Beads at James Fort in Virginia
The glass bead assemblage generated by archaeological excavations at the seventeenth-century English colonial site of Jamestown in Virginia contains an anomalously large proportion of types, such as Nueva Cadiz and faceted chevron, that traditionally have been viewed as diagnostic of sixteenth-century Spanish assemblages. This study has applied the Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) method of compositional ana…
Metal Detecting in the Wake of 16th Century a.d. Spanish Expeditions
In southeastern North America, the received wisdom has been that most 16th century a.d. European objects occur in mortuary contexts, the archaeological manifestation of gifting and barter between European leaders and Indigenous chiefs. Our application of metal detector surveys in four projects in Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi now throws this interpretation into question. We have found significant numbers of diagnostic iron and cuprous 16th ce…
Archaeological identification of historically referenced sixteenth-century Native provinces
Archaeological confirmation of the location of the Native province of Capachequi is presented along with new details concerning its Late Mississippian character. Previously, the polity has been known mainly from descriptions left by chroniclers of Hernando de Soto's sixteenth-century entrada. The new information is the outcome of a decade-long archaeological project in the Chickasawhatchee Creek basin of southwestern Georgia. Above all, I must re…
Then Potano”
The town of Potano, refenced in sixteenth-century and in early seventeenth-century Spanish accounts of the exploration and settlement of the Southeast, is one of the named sites associated with the Hernando de Soto entrada that possesses sufficient documentary and archaeological evidence that would allow for its firm identification. The Richardson site, 8AL100, has long been known as a site which has both an early seventeenth-century Spanish and …
The case for a Late Lamar polity on the lower Ocmulgee River in Georgia
This paper develops the case for an indigenous polity on the lower Ocmulgee River in Georgia. Doing so enhances understanding of the late prehistoric–early historic indigenous cultural landscape in the Atlantic coastal plain. It also allows for refined interpretation of indigenous responses to European colonial activities. Two lines of evidence, a ceramic attribute analysis and a European artifact analysis, are the principal new bases for establi…
An Appraisal of the Indigenous Acquisition of Contact-Era European Metal Objects in Southeastern North America
The Factors of Climate and Weather in Sixteenth-Century La Florida
Evolution of a Ritual
An Experimental Perspective on Mississippian Small Pole Structures
Architectural Variability in the Southeast
The Weather Is Fine, Wish You Were Here, Because I’m the Last One Alive
Western European colonies in the New World offer a valuable context in which to explore the influence of environment on colonizing efforts. In this chapter I explore the example of Jamestown in English “Virginia,” especially during the crucial first decades of colonization between 1607 and 1680, when the matter of learning the environment – or not – is a key element of the story. From practically the moment of arrival of the English, there has be…
