Human resource development and Africa’s structural transformation
Purpose This study aims to examine how human resource development impacts Africa’s structural transformation and the role of world uncertainty in influencing this relationship. Design/methodology/approach The study is based on a sample of forty-seven African countries over the period 2010–2022. The adopted empirical strategies are Fixed Effects Regression, Driscoll–Kraay Fixed Effects with Standard Errors, and the Generalized Method of Moments fo…
Agricultural shock resilience strategies and their effects on family farms in rural Senegal
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate how family farming serves as a relevant source of income generation for the Senegalese population. In the face of climate change and agricultural shocks, the production of family farms and income generated from family farms are unfavorably affected. Given these hazards and shocks, family farms must adopt strategies of adaptation to climate change and agricultural shocks to prevent and mitigate the …
Education, technology and agricultural transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa
Purpose This study aims to assess linkages between education, technology and agricultural transformation in sub-Saharan Africa. In developing countries, agriculture struggles with limited resources, poor infrastructure and climate change impacts. Access to information technologies (IT) has become crucial for boosting production and resilience. However, farmers’ lack of understanding of IT can negatively affect their food production. Thus, educati…
Pathways to Carbon Neutrality
As climate change and environmental deterioration continue to escalate due to substantial CO 2 emissions, nations worldwide are implementing approaches to alleviate CO 2 emissions and accomplish carbon neutrality (CNE) goals. The current study examined CNE objectives for five selected nations in Africa, spanning from 1990 to 2022. This paper assessed the effects of economic policy uncertainty (EPU), renewable energy transition (RET), environmenta…
Investigating How Firms in Emerging Economies Integrate AI‐Driven Systems and ESG Metrics Into Biodiversity Conservation and Circular Economy Strategies
This study investigates how firms in emerging economies integrate artificial intelligence (AI) with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices to enhance biodiversity conservation and circular economy outcomes. It examines the mediating role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) governance and the moderating effect of institutional strength in shaping this relationship. Using longitudinal data from 4320 firm‐year observations across…
Digital Transformation and Informal Innovation in Africa
Amid increasing environmental and economic pressures, Africa's transition to a circular economy ( CE ) presents a vital pathway to inclusive, low‐carbon development. Yet, how digital transformation, informal innovation, and science, technology, and innovation (STI) policy readiness shape CE outcomes remains underexplored. This study examines these dynamics across 45 African countries from 2000 to 2024, using generalized estimating equations, pane…
Shaping Energy Transitions
Energy is a fundamental driver of economic growth, shaping productivity, industrialization, and long‐term economic resilience. In sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA), where energy access remains uneven and infrastructure is underdeveloped, understanding sector‐specific energy demand is essential for designing sustainable energy strategies. This study examines the relationship between sectoral growth and energy consumption in 28 SSA countries from 2000 to 20…
Economic freedom, tourism and income inequality in sub-Saharan African economies

This study used the panel corrected standard errors (PCSE) and generalised method of moments (GMM) estimation techniques to account for cross-sectional dependence and en…
Does economic complexity mitigate carbon inequality
Despite policies to reduce carbon inequality, it remains very high. Yet, the 2023 Climate Inequality Report underlines that the bottom 50% of the world’s population that contributes to 12% of carbon emissions is exposed to 75% of income losses that are related to climate change. Whereas the literature has identified a wide range of carbon inequality drivers, this paper stands out from previous works by emphasising the role of economic complexity …
