Reality television and the power of dirt
Following on from other media theorists, John Hartley suggested in 1983 that ‘if TV has a distinctive feature, it is that it is a “dirty” category’. In this conception, television's dirt, and the power it manifests, is purely metaphorical: an effect of its ‘scandalous’ aggravation of otherwise ‘clean’ binary formations. A carbon-rich black layer, dating to ≈12.9 ka, has been previously identified at ≈50 Clovis-age sites across North America and appears contemporaneous with the abrupt onset of Younger Dryas (YD) cooling. The in situ bones of extinct Pleistocene megafauna, along with Clovis tool assemblages, occur below this black layer but not within or above it. Nitrogen isotope analysis is a common technique for investigating dietary behaviour in modern and archaeological populations. One of its primary uses is to provide trophic level information.
