  • Inland and Maritime Adaptations in the Southern Cone

R Barberena, Marianne Christensen et al.•CHAPTER•The Oxford Handbook of South…•2026

The Southern Cone of South America is the last continental landmass colonized by humans during the late Pleistocene. From a global perspective, this part of the continent can be characterized as a large peninsular territory where Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego Island are surrounded by the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. In this chapter we summarize the main diachronic trends of economic and geographic change for the human societies inhabiting the Pa…

  • Gastrointestinal Parasites of Ancient Domestic Goats from the Archaeological Site Cueva Huenul 1, Patagonia, Argentina

María Ornela Beltrame, Tietze Eleonor et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2026•References: 62

The goat is one of the first herbivores to be domesticated, expanding throughout the world. Goats were introduced in South America during the sixteenth century. Gastrointestinal (GI) parasitism constitutes one of the main constraints to the breeding of goats worldwide. This is the first study conducted to investigate the GI parasites recovered from goat coprolites from historical times of Patagonia. Goat coprolites were studied from the archaeolo…

Two temporal blocks were defined with signs of human use from the middle Holocene (ca. 8900 calendar years BP) to the late (746 calendar years BP). The objective of the work i…

  • Isotopes and bioarchaeology in the Andes

    Open Access•A Tessone, R Barberena et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 78

In this article, we present an isotopic perspective of key research questions in Andean bioarchaeology, focusing on the ways in which stable and radiogenic isotope analyses have contributed to our understanding of the past. Andean archaeology offers a window into long‐term processes of economic, socioecological and political change since the mid‐Holocene, thus providing historical trajectories of socio‐ecological change relevant for global compar…

The information generated strengthens the possibility that the inca state controlled these high-altitude environments to mai…

  • Multi-isotope approach allows tracking the circulation of ceramics across the Andes (Argentina and Chile)

    Open Access•Cecilia Frigolé, P Le Roux et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 28

The circulation of material culture across space is a central topic in Andean archaeology and has witnessed significant growth during the last decades. Ceramics have been a part of this trend through the analysis of the abundance of chemical elements. Aiming at expanding ceramic sourcing and the study of large-scale conveyance of artefacts, we present the first multi-isotopic approach combining strontium, neodymium, and lead isotopes in South Ame…

In this study, it was characterized and discussed the oldest known Southern Patagonia individual presenting nasal fracture, among other lesions, most probably resulting from interpersonal violence. We reanalysed the individual 2 fr…

  • The timing and mode of southern Andean human migrations

    Open Access•R Barberena, Lorena Becerra-Valdivia et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 8

While recent genomic and isotopic information show that migration has been pervasive along human history, southern Andean archaeology has largely overlooked its importance in shaping human trajectories of sociocultural change. Building on previous isotopic research that identified the presence of migrant farmers in the Uspallata Valley (Mendoza, Argentina), we present chronological and bioarchaeological results that help to characterize the timin…

  • Hunter-Gatherer Home Ranges and Marine Resources

    Luis Alberto Borrero, R Barberena•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2006•Cited by: 82•References: 27

The dietary importance of marine resources is often cited as a factor conditioning spatial organization among huntergatherers. In particular, fishing has been linked with a settled way of life and relatively small home ranges. A case study from Late Holocene southern Patagonia involving stable isotope analysis of human and faunal remains and examination of the spatial distribution of marine items suggests an important role for marine foods, a low…

Open Access•R Barberena, María Victoria Fernández et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2018•Cited by: 26•References: 11

Northwestern Patagonia is located in a tectonically active part of the southern Andes (Argentina), which has facilitated the formation of obsidian, including pyroclastic deposits that have been affected by geomorphic processes, resulting in a complex obsidian landscape. To date, the geomorphic relocation of obsidian in the landscape has not been a focus of systematic research, and this hampers our understanding of prehistoric human mobility. We p…

Despite the large socio-economic changes recorded, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr values indicate a persisting scenario of low systematic mobility between the different geological regions. Our results suggest that strontium isotope values provide the most germane means to track patterns of human occupation of distinct regions in complex geological landscapes, offering a much higher spatial resolution than oxygen isotopes in the southern Andes

This work aims to build a comprehensive isotopic ecology with the ultimate purpose of assessing long-term human diet decision-making by means of stable isotope analysis. We present a set of δ13Ccollagenand δ15Ncollagenisotopic values on the main faunal resources from the forest and steppe areas of the Aisén region (Central-Western Patagonia, Chile), in order to characterise their isotopic ranges and assess their consumption by past hunter-gathere…
