  • Tracking Bronze Age ‘itinerant smiths’ in western Poland

Open Access•Mateusz Stróżyk, Łukasz Pospieszny et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 57

The neodymium (Nd) isotope composition of stone casting moulds found in graves of Bronze Age ‘itinerant smiths’ in western Poland was analysed to determine the provenance of their raw materials. For the first time in archaeological research, the Nd model age (T DM )—a highly useful parameter in studying the provenance of geological materials—has been applied. Nd data revealed that the material for making casting moulds came from the Sudetes. Addi…

  • Cave funeral practices during the Roman and Migration Periods in the Cracow Upland, southern Poland

Open Access•M Wojenka, Bartosz Kontny et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2023•References: 13

Although caves have been used for funerary purposes almost since the dawn of time, there is very little evidence of such use in Central European Barbaricum. This paper presents newly obtained results from the Cracow Upland (southern Poland) concerning multiple skeletal remains that apparently share a similar third–fifth centuries AD chronology, corresponding to the Late Roman and Early Migration Periods. Multiple analyses have been performed to s…

  • Oh, My Beloved, Great Bull!” An Interdisciplinary Approach to Cattle as a Marker of Economic and Political Status in Medieval Sub-Saharan Societies

Marta Osypińska, Bogdan Żurawski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 9

The historical, zooarchaeological and isotopic data concerning cattle breeding and management in the medieval Middle Nile Valley are considered in this paper in the first such comprehensive research for the region. The main source of data are the nearly 10,300 animal remains. The archaeozoological analyses focused primarily on cattle morphology. Strontium isotope analyses were used to indicate the local/non-local origin of animals encompassing th…

  • The Provenance of Ancient Cotton and Wool Textiles from Nubia

    Open Access•Magdalena Wozniak, Zdzislaw Belka•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 15

Late antique and medieval cotton and wool textiles found in the middle Nile Valley (Nubia, northern Sudan) were analysed for their technical characteristics and strontium (Sr) isotope composition. All wool textiles exhibit Sr isotope signatures consistent with the isotopic background of the region studied and are considered to be of local origin. However, a medieval wool kilim from Meinarti shows technical and aesthetic features suggesting its fo…

  • Elusive Goths in northern Poland

Piotr Łuczkiewicz, Łukasz Pospieszny et al.•ARTICLE•Praehistorische Zeitschrift•2022•Cited by: 6

From 19 inhumation graves from the cemetery in Malbork-Wielbark (northern Poland) samples (teeth) were collected for the analysis of strontium ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) isotopes in order to try to determine the origin of the subjects. The chronological range of the analyzed statistical sample covers about 300 years of over 600 years of necropolis history, i. e. the period from the end of the early pre-Roman period (phase A3 – the last decades BC) to the C1…

  • Wild and Domestic Cattle in the Ancient Nile Valley

Marta Osypińska, Piotr Osypiński et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 12

Archaeological sites at Affad (Sudan) are the only ones in northeastern Africa providing ostological remains of both African aurochs (Bos primigenius), dated to 50 kya, and domestic cattle, dated to 7–6 kya. The evidence enables studies of behavioral diversity between taurids. Strontium isotope analyses of the tooth enamel of both Pleistocene and Holocene ruminants suggest the local origin of these animals. The archaeozoological analysis reveals …

  • Human Mobility in the Final Eneolithic Population of Święte, Jarosław District, South-Eastern Poland

    Open Access•Zdzislaw Belka, Jolanta Dopieralska et al.•ARTICLE•Baltic-Pontic Studies•2018•Cited by: 7•References: 4

Strontium isotope ratios ( 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) were applied to investigate provenance amongst the Final Eneolithic population at Święte (sites 11, 15 and 20) in the Subcarpathian region, south-eastern Poland. The study used 11 human enamel samples collected from the niche graves of the Corded Ware culture. To obtain base-line information on the local Sr isotope composition seven animal enamel samples were also examined. They were found in the adjacent …
