Background. A growing body of empirical evidence suggests that organisational factors are more important than classroom specific issues in determining teacher morale. Will an effective discipline policy improve student misbehaviour and result in a reduction of teacher stress? It is commonly believed that student misbehaviour is a major cause of teacher stress, and that the degree of student misbehaviour is reflected in student suspension rates. Studies of social support typically have relegated the recipient of support to a passive role. Little empirical work has looked at an individual's active attempts to garner support from others. Two studies are reported that investigate individual differences in active support seeking. In study one (n = 66), the criterion validity of a new scale - dubbed SEEK - was demonstrated.
