Should We Lengthen the School Term
This article examines the merits of proposals to increase the length of the school term. In reviewing studies of school time and learning, the article points out that there is considerable variation in how existing time is used and that inconsistent effects for time are often found. The research evidence is therefore argued not to support increases in the school term as a means of increasing student achievement
Effects of Whole Class, Ability Grouped, and Individualized Instruction on Mathematics Achievement
Achievement and attitudinal effects of three mathematics instruction methods directed in varying degrees toward accommodating diversity in student performance levels were compared in two randomized field experiments. The consequences of using alternative measures of time and achievement are examined in an observational study of 18 elementary school classes.
