  • Evidence of Pellagra on 19th Century Human Crania From Northern Italy by Combining Stable Isotope and Paleopathological Analyses

Open Access•N Carrara, Gregorio Dal Sasso et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025•References: 2

Pellagra is a disease caused by a nutritional deficiency, with fatal outcome due to multiple‐organ failure, that affected European rural areas until the early decades of the 20th century, especially Veneto region (Italy). At the skeletal level, previous studies pointed out that pathological signs left by the disease are generic and typical of many forms of avitaminosis, not useful to recognize the deaths by pellagra in archaeological contests. He…

  • The Cannero Castle (Italy)

Open Access•Giulia Ricci, Michele Secco et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 41

The mortar samples of the Castle of Cannero (Lake Maggiore, Italy) have been characterized and radiocarbon ( 14 C) dated. The presence of LDH phases was identified. The hydraulic reaction was evaluated by a multi-analytical approach. Careful extraction, preparation and purification of the binder fraction have been performed. Contaminations due to LDH phases have been removed allowing reliable absolute dating of the structures. Non-hydraulic lime-…

  • Technological transfers in the Mediterranean on the verge of Romanization

Open Access•Michele Secco, Simone Dilaria et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 37

  • Selecting the Most Reliable 14 C Dating Material Inside Mortars

Open Access•Anna Addis, Michele Secco et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Cited by: 14•References: 20

In order to radiocarbon ( 14 C) date a building, several components of the mortar could be used, such as the mortar binder, the lime lumps, the charcoal particles and shell fragments eventually present among the aggregates. In particular, the mortar binder requires a purification treatment in order to separate it from other sources of carbon, which could change the 14 C signature of the binder invalidating the dating process. Here, we present the…

  • Mineralogical clustering of the structural mortars from the Sarno Baths, Pompeii

Open Access•Michele Secco, Caterina Canovaro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cultural Heritage•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 26

  • The Misérègne slag deposit (Valle d'Aosta, Western Alps, Italy)

Open Access•Luca Toffolo, Anna Addis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 5

  • The Evolution of the Vitruvian Recipes over 500 Years of Floor‐Making Techniques

Open Access•Michele Secco, Simone Dilaria et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2018•Cited by: 11•References: 10

The paper reports the results of a research project aimed at the characterization of the floor bedding mortars of two Roman houses in Aquileia (north‐eastern Italy), the Domus delle Bestie Ferite and the Domus di Tito Macro. Seventy floor bedding mortars of the two domus were selected and almost half were fully minero‐petrographically characterized by means of optical microscopy operated in transmitted light (OM‐TL), X‐ray powder diffraction anal…

  • Preparation and Dating of Mortar Samples—Mortar Dating Inter-Comparison Study (Modis)

    Open Access•I Hajdas, A Lindroos et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•Cited by: 31•References: 34

Seven radiocarbon laboratories: Åbo/Aarhus, CIRCE, CIRCe, ETHZ, Poznań, RICH, and Milano-Bicocca performed separation of carbonaceous fractions suitable for 14 C dating of four mortar samples selected for the MOrtar Dating Inter-comparison Study (MODIS). In addition, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) analyses were completed by Milano-Bicocca and IRAMAT-CRP2A Bordeaux. Each laboratory performed separation according to laboratory protocol. Re…

  • Mortar Dating Methodology

Open Access•Roald Hayen, Mark Van Strydonck et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•Cited by: 25•References: 16

Absolute dating of mortars is crucial when trying to pin down construction phases of archaeological sites and historic stone buildings to a certain point in time or to confirm, but possibly also challenge, existing chronologies. To evaluate various sample preparation methods for radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating of mortars as well as to compare different dating methods, i.e. 14 C and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), a mortar dating intercomparis…

  • Late Bronze Age Copper Smelting Slags from Luserna (Trentino, Italy)

    Open Access•Anna Addis, I Angelini et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 17

In the Late Bronze Age, the extractive metallurgy of copper in north-eastern Italy achieved a peak of technological efficiency and mass production, as evidenced by the substantial number of metallurgical sites and the large volume of slags resulting from smelting activities. In order to define the technological features of the Late Bronze Age metallurgical process, more than 20 slags from the smelting site of Luserna (Trentino, Italy) were fully …
