Grief discourse in online support forums following miscarriage
This study investigates what makes initial messages to online grief forums successful through a rhetorical move analysis of 165 messages following miscarriage (71 in French, 94 in Mandarin). Six moves are identified, four shared across both corpora, suggesting core membership-brokering strategies operate cross-culturally. Persuasion, positioning and issue framing
A central aspect of diplomacy is persuasion in the context of intercultural communication. A challenge is that persuasive appeals are culturally informed, reflecting differing linguistic affordances and rhetorical traditions. This article presents the findings of a cross-cultural study of identity positioning in the political discourse of religious, conservative politicians in Italy and Northern Ireland. Findings point to the use of frames of reference around family, faith, freedom and societal catastrophe. Identity formation among novice academic teachers - a longitudinal study
This study reports findings from an in-depth, longitudinal investigation of the formation of 13 novice tutors’ professional identities as academic teachers. The study spanned tutors’ first two years in-service, while they were also participating in a teacher development course.
