Th dating of coral abraders from stratified deposits at Tangatatau Rockshelter, Mangaia, Cook Islands
Lateral slip rate of Alhama de Murcia fault (SE Iberian Peninsula) based on a morphotectonic analysis
Precise chronology of Polynesian temple construction and use for southeastern Maui, Hawaiian Islands determined by 230Th dating of corals
A multi-proxy stalagmite reconstruction of climate in the Central Sierra Nevada during the last deglaciation
Archeological deposits at Abric Romaní extend to 110 ka
The Pleistocene prehistory of the Lake Victoria basin
Millennial-scale variations in western Sierra Nevada precipitation during the last glacial cycle MIS 4/3 transition
Dansgaard–Oeschger (D–O) cycles had far-reaching effects on Northern Hemisphere and tropical climate systems during the last glacial period, yet the climatic response to D–O cycles in western North America is controversial, especially prior to 55 ka. We document changes in precipitation along the western slope of the central Sierra Nevada during early Marine Oxygen Isotope Stages (MIS) 3 and 4 (55–67 ka) from a U-series dated speleothem record fr…
The pānānā or 'sighting wall' at Hanamauloa, Kahikinui, Maui
A unique stone monument consisting of a notched, linear wall and associated features, situated at Hanamauloa in Kahikinui District, Maui Island, is interpreted as a probable pre-contact navigational structure. Ethnographic testimony refers to the structure as a pānānā or "sighting wall". Archaeological investigation revealed that the wall and associated cairn and upright are positioned so that the notch precisely frames the stars of the Southern …
Residential Chronology, Household Subsistence, and the Emergence of Socioeconomic Territories in Leeward Kohala, Hawai'i Island
Previous research in leeward Kohala, Hawai'i Island, has determined that the Leeward Kohala Field System (LKFS), a vast agricultural zone covering ∼60 km 2 , developed between the 14th and 18th centuries AD. Additional analyses have documented the establishment of traditional socioeconomic territories, known as ahupua'a , in tandem with the expansion of the field system. This article further refines the chronology of human settlement and socioeco…
The Onemea Site (Taravai Island, Mangareva) and the human colonization of Southeastern Polynesia
When first test excavated in 2003, the Onemea site on Taravai Island (site 190‐12‐TAR‐6) yielded high densities of extirpated and extinct bird bones which, along with radiocarbon dates of AD 1000 to 1050, suggested a colonization phase occupation. Expanded excavations in 2005, reported here, revealed additional details of site stratigraphy, chronology and use. Initial human activity on the dune surface included exploitation of nesting or roosting…
Oxygen isotope composition of annually banded modern and mid-Holocene travertine and evidence of paleomonsoon floods, Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA
Holocene and modern travertine formed in spring-fed Havasu Creek of the Grand Canyon, Arizona, was studied to determine the factors governing its oxygen-isotope composition. Analysis of substrate-grown travertine indicates that calculated calcite-formation temperatures compare favorably with measured water temperatures, and include silt-rich laminae deposited by monsoon-driven floods. Ancient spring-pool travertine is dated by U-series at 7380 ± …
Devils Hole, Nevada, δ 18 O record extended to the mid-Holocene
The mid-to-late Pleistocene Devils Hole δ 18 O record has been extended from 60,000 to 4500 yr ago. The new δ 18 O time series, in conjunction with the one previously published, is shown to be a proxy of Pacific Ocean sea surface temperature (SST) off the coast of California. During marine oxygen isotope stages (MIS) 2 and 6, the Devil Hole and SST time series exhibit a steady warming that began 5000 to > 10,000 yr prior to the last and penultima…
Dating fluvial terraces by 230 Th/U on pedogenic carbonate, Wind River Basin, Wyoming
Reliable and precise ages of Quaternary pedogenic carbonate can be obtained with 230 Th/U dating by thermal ionization mass spectrometry applied to carefully selected milligram-size samples. Datable carbonate can form within a few thousand years of surface stabilization allowing ages of Quaternary deposits and surfaces to be closely estimated. Pedogenic carbonate clast-rinds from gravels of glacio-fluvial terraces in the Wind River Basin have med…
