  • First vertebrate faunal record from submerged Sundaland

    Open Access•H W K Berghuis, Gerrit D Van Den Bergh et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Environments and Humans•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 19

The Sunda Shelf currently holds the world’s largest shelf sea. During Pleistocene sea-level lowstands the area emerged, forming a vast landmass called Sundaland. Intermittently exposed Sundaland played an important role in the regional vertebrate biogeography and evolution of species including Homo erectus and, in the Late Pleistocene, Homo sapiens . So far, our models of the Pleistocene biogeography of Sundaland were based on the distribution of…

The locality Schöningen (Germany) is an important source of knowledge about Lower Paleolithic hominin subsistence. The locality includes a series of sites dated to the late Middle Pleistocene with a Holsteinian (MIS 11) and Reinsdorf Interglacial (MIS 9) age. One of the youngest sites is Schöningen 13 II-4, the Spear Horizon site also known as the Horse Butchery site. The organic remains excavated here are exceptionally well-preserved as they wer…
