  • Viral suppression by residency status among men living with HIV in the context of the expanded ART policy in Shanghai, China

Open Access•Joshua B Mendelsohn, Yinzhong Shen et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

Access to China’s national free antiretroviral therapy (ART) program was historically restricted to the home province or province of birth (“Hukou”). During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shanghai facilitated access to free ART and supportive services for all Shanghai residents regardless of residency status. Our aim was to study differences in viral suppression according to residency status in Shanghai, China. We conducted a cross-sectional survey with …

  • Post-arrival HIV acquisition patterns

Open Access•Wangari Tharao, Thabani Nyoni et al.•ARTICLE•Canadian Journal of Public Health•2025•References: 19

  • Disclosure of HIV-serodiscordant relationships and association with viral suppression

    Open Access•Joshua B Mendelsohn, Liviana Calzavara et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2023

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the effects of disclosure of HIV-serodiscordant relationships on clinical outcomes. We aimed to evaluate the effect of relationship disclosure on HIV viral suppression, and hypothesized that disclosure by HIV-positive and HIV-negative partners would be associated with viral suppression in the HIV-positive partner. METHODS: We conducted a Canadian national online and telephone-administered survey of HIV-positive a…

  • Social capital and HIV-serodiscordance

Open Access•James Iveniuk, Liviana Calzavara et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2022

As people living with HIV are living longer lives, they have a correspondingly greater opportunity to enjoy long-term romantic and sexual partnerships, including with persons who do not live with HIV ("serodiscordant" relationships). In these dyads, asymmetries may emerge in access to social resources between partners. In this paper we examined how serodiscordant couples access informal (interpersonal, such as family and friends) and formal (prac…

  • A national recruitment strategy for HIV-serodiscordant partners living in Canada for the Positive Plus One study

Open Access•Min Xi, Sandra Bullock et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2022

Our findings provide important new information on and support the use of a multi-pronged approach to recruit HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals involved in HIV-serodiscordant relationships in Canada. More creative strategies are needed to help index partners recruit their partner in relationships with lower satisfaction and shorter duration and further minimize the risk of "happy couple" bias

  • Dual pharmaceutical citizenship

    Open Access•Molly Ryan, Joshua B Mendelsohn et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 19

  • Perceived stigma among patients receiving antiretroviral treatment

Open Access•Susan Kaai, Sandra Bullock et al.•ARTICLE•SAHARA-J Journal of Social…•2010•References: 56

HIV and AIDS remain highly stigmatised. Modified directly observed therapy (m-DOT) supports antiretroviral treatment (ART) adherence but little is known about its association with perceived stigma in resource-constrained settings. In 2003, 234 HIV-infected adults enrolled in a two-arm randomised trial comparing a health centre-based m-DOT strategy with standard self-administration of ART. Data on perceived stigma were collected using Berger's HIV…

  • Racial Sexual Mixing and Factors Associated with Condom Use Among Middle Eastern-Canadians

Open Access•Nour Schoueri, Sandra Bullock et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant and Minority…•2009

  • How Drug using men who have sex with men account for substance use during Sexual Behaviours

Ted Myers, Jeffrey P Aguinaldo et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2004

Much HIV prevention research ignores the underlying reasons why drug-using men who have sex with men (DU-MSM) use substances during sex. The present study explores DU-MSM descriptions of the relationships among substance use, sex, and risky sex practices. Twenty-seven in-depth qualitative interviews were conducted with sexually active DU-MSM. The research findings illustrate six roles of substances within the sexual lives of DU-MSM: Enhancing the…

  • Can Alcohol Expectancies and Attributions Explain Western Europe's North–South Gradient in Alcohol's Role in Violence

    Open Access•Robin Room, Sandra Bullock•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2002•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Recent time-series analyses provide further support to the idea of a north–south gradient in Western Europe in alcohol's role in homicide. Differences in drunken comportment have long been hypothesized as part of the explanation. Five items about expectations about alcohol's role in violence, and the potential excuse-value of intoxication, were asked of 1,000 adults in an RDD survey in each of six countries: Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, G…

  • Sexual Partnering and Risk of HIV/STD Among Aboriginals
