Daring routine
The turbulent times have led to increased research on risk perception by tourists. Our research aims to measure whether tourists’ risk perceptions are also related to travel frequency, not just revisit frequency. Our study examined tourists with a representative sample (N = 387). Pearson correlation and basic linear regression analysis were used to test hypotheses. The main finding of our study was that those who travel more often have lower dest…
“Get a PhD and Get Out”
The democratization of science has significantly transformed doctoral education. While numerous studies have examined the potential for collaboration between PhD students and their supervisors, particularly with respect to the mutual benefits of joint research, the long-term impacts of continued mentor–mentee relationships following the completion of a PhD program remain underexplored. This study addresses this research gap by focusing on economi…
Good neighbours are worth their weight in gold” – The role of familiarity on the revisit intention to neighbouring countries
The aim of this study is to narrow down the research gap identified while uncovering the impact mechanism of destination familiarity on the revisit intention to the neighbouring countries. The research, justifies the hypothesis established based on the literature review by placing the analysis in the context of Hungary, located in the heart of East-Central Europe, and its relations with the seven neighbouring countries. In addition to the databas…
Exploring economic fitness and international tourism receipts
This study examines the impact of economic fitness (EF) on international tourism performance at the country level. Using a dynamic ordinary least squares regression, we analyze the effect of EF on tourism performance across 12 EU countries from 1990 to 2019. A novel database was constructed using indicators from the World Bank and the European Travel Commission. The findings reveal that EF positively influences tourism performance, measured by in…

Mobility patterns of satellite travellers based on mobile phone cellular data
For a long time, tourism statistics were the only reliable source of information on tourism mobility. Tourism statistics are inadequate for the analysis of tourist mobility within state borders and across Schengen Borders without using registered accommodations. Big data offers the opportunity to gain a better understanding of tourism movements, for example, same-day tourist flows in metropolitan areas. Here, we introduce the concept of the satel…
Instagram, TripAdvisor) posztjait, illetve topikjait vizsgálva százezres nagyságrendben találkozhatunk a „jó hely” szókapcsolat felhasználásával a turisztikai élménye…
Repositioning Budapest’s tourism milieu for a post-Covid-19 period
In order to propose a repositioning toolkit, this research addresses the essence of the daytime tourism milieu of the Hungarian capital Budapest’s nightly party zone and formulates the following two research questions: (1) What are the available elements of the daytime tourism milieu of Budapest’s party zone? and (2) How can this milieu enhance tourist experience for leveraging a sense of place in a future post-Covid-19 era? The data for this res…
Educational Tourism and Nation Building
Educational travel provides opportunities for participants to explore specific issues in unconventional ways. In Hungary, primary and secondary schools organise annual study trips as part of their curricula. The aim of these trips is to familiarise students with the main sights of the country, and to bring to life national narratives discussed in lessons. Furthermore, these trips often play a key role in students’ socio-psychological development,…
The multidimensional realities of mediatized places
Tour guides can transform tourist experiences. This is particularly evident in TV-series themed tours where tourists’ expectations are more likely to be met if a guide leads them into different dimensions of space and time. Here, we develop a model of the multidimensional realities of mediatized places by applying grounded theory, capturing how the transformative role of tour guides is key to the creation of memorable experiences. We illustrate h…
Non-planning and tourism consumption in Budapest's inner city
The relationship between urban planning and tourism consumption is presented through one of the most attractive and popular districts of Budapest (District VII). Budapest is the capital city of Hungary and has a population of 1.7 million inhabitants making it one of the largest metropolitan regions in Central Eastern Europe. Budapest is typical of many other post-socialist cities in that its urban development process has followed a somewhat diffe…
A vidékiesség vonzásában
A nagyvárosi agglomerációk turisztikai szerepkörének értékelésére vállalkozó tanulmány a vizsgálatba vont térségek üdülőfunkcióját és szálláshelyigényes vendégforgalmát elemezve tárja fel az úgynevezett láthatatlan turizmusban érintett települések körét. Egyrészt a 2001. évi népszámlálás és a TeIR (2002–2014) adataiból kiindulva lehatárolja a különböző mértékű üdülőfunkcióval rendelkező településállományt, majd megvizsgálja az egyes agglomerációk…
Anti-shopping tourism
In this article, based on qualitative research in Hungary, we propose a new phrase for the field of tourist consumption. Our notion ‘anti-shopping tourism’ refers to the resistant attitude towards consumption and spending money during shopping-related tours. The research discussed in the paper analyses participants’ motivations, attitudes and behaviour on one-day coach trips that include various programmes, for example, sightseeing, lunch, spa vi…
Turizmusnak látszó kiskereskedelem
A magyar társadalom a nemzetközi és a belföldi bevásárlóturizmusban egyaránt érintett. A határainkon belül zajló és az azokon túlra irányuló egynapos forgalomban a vásárlás hosszú ideje vezető utazási motiváció. A kiskereskedelmi szféra azonban a diszkontáruházak, a hipermarketek és a bevásárlóközpontok költésre csábító világán kívüli értékesítési formákkal is igyekszik az utazással párosuló keresletet élénkíteni és szélesíteni. A tv-shopok stílu…

Boldogító utazás
A szubjektív életminőséggel kapcsolatban felmerülő kérdések tisztázása napjainkra már nem csak a tudományos műhelyek közötti párbeszédben, hanem a társadalom közérzetéért felelős politikai berkekben is prioritást élvező témának számít. A kutatók, legyenek azok a filozófia, a pszichológia, a szociológia, a geográfia vagy éppen a közgazdaságtudomány képviselői, leginkább a boldogság forrását, a szubjektív jólét eléréséhez vezető utat, a politikusok…
New Places in Old Spaces
The aim of this paper is to map some of the new developments that have been taking place in Budapest since 1989, in particular focusing on the role that tourism and cultural regeneration have played in transforming old spaces into new places. The redevelopment of former socialist cities is politically complex, as new power relationships need to be negotiated, heritage values must be reassessed, and widening economic and social disparities should …
Relationships between International Tourism and Migration in Hungary
Tourism and migration are increasingly important elements of human mobility, but surprisingly little effort has been made to investigate the interrelationship between these in Hungary. Reviewing the literature on the tourism–migration nexus, the article identifies a number of relevant themes for applying to the Hungarian case, as well as a number of theoretical and empirical challenges. In this paper, two main themes are emphasized. First, the se…
A magyarországi lakótelepek kiskereskedelmi profilja
Egy 2045 üzletre kiterjedő or…
A turisztikai miliő földrajzi értelmezése
Annak ellenére, hogy egy célállomás vonzerőinek értékelésekor kézenfekvőnek tűnik a vizsgált hely miliőjének tárgyalása, a turisztikai miliő mégsem tartozik a turizmuselmélet meghonosodott fogalmai közé. Véleményünk szerint a turisztikai miliő a turizmusban hasznosított tér élményelemei megélésének objektív vetülete, vagyis annak a folyamatnak az eredménye, amelynek során az adott helyet felkereső egyének észlelésének lelki eredője a társadalmi t…
Adalékok a turizmus és a migráció kapcsolatának elméleti megközelítéséhez
A turizmus és a migráció között meglévő kapcsolatok nyilvánvalósága ellenére azok tudományos igényű feltárásának viszonylagos háttérbe szorulása arra vezethető vissza, hogy a két jelenség átfedéseinek és különbségeinek elméleti lehatárolása számos nehézség elé állítja a kutatókat. A tanulmány elsősorban a turizmus és a migráció bonyolult kapcsolatának gyermekcipőben járó kutatása során született nemzetközi és hazai szakirodalom feldolgozására épí…

Using one of the most frequented part of the city, i. e. District I, the study reveals those specific features of the local society, foreign visitors, services and the self-government that influence the touristic activity of this urban quarter on the one hand and the conflicts amon…
