Covid-19 Impact on the Lives of Youth Experiencing Homelessness
This study examines the impact of COVID-19 on the lives of youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) using a concurrent mixed-methods approach. We recruited individuals aged 18–25 ( n = 314) who were homeless and unstably housed (e.g., living in the streets with friends, hotels, or shelters). We measured COVID-19 fear and impact quantitatively and analyzed it using descriptive statistics. Concurrently, we conducted in-person or phone interviews to ex…
Discrimination experiences and mental health outcomes among African American homeless smokers
Daily discrimination experiences are associated with both the physical and psychological well-being among African Americans (AAs). In this study, we measured perceived discrimination, depression, and anxiety using the Everyday Discrimination Scale, the Centers for Epidemi…
Results of a Randomized Wait-List Controlled Trial of Caya
Youth experiencing homelessness (YEH) face challenges that increase their susceptibility to HIV/STIs. Nurse case management is effective in managing the complex needs of populations experiencing homelessness and reducing HIV risk. A randomized wait-list control study conducted between September 2019 to May 2023 evaluated the CAYA "Come As You Are" intervention. This nurse-led HIV prevention for YEH aged 16-25 years focused on the uptake of HIV pr…
Adaptation of a mindfulness-based intervention for trauma-exposed, unhoused women with substance use disorder

Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial of Multi-Disciplinary Community-Based Biofeedback Vs Health Promotion Programs on Mental Health And Drug Use Among People Experiencing Homelessness
Background: PEH are most vulnerable to COVID-19 due to high levels of chronic disease and social isolation. However, in Skid Row Los Angeles, there are limited resources for mental health and drug treatment services. Biofeedback (BF) has been found to decrease depression and substance use among drug users; however, no studies have assessed the impact of BF on PEH during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aim: Our multi-disciplinary team designed and pilot te…
Perceptions of Homeless Adults and Their Providers on Coping With the Impact of Covid-19 Pandemic on Mental Health, Substance Use, and Harm Reduction Services
Adults experiencing homelessness experience a disproportionate burden of health disparities which has further exacerbated mental health, substance use, and coping during the COVID-19 pandemic. As limited data is available to understand the experience of adults experiencing homelessness and their health during this time, the purpose of this study was to explore how COVID-19 may have impacted their mental health, substance use, and ways of coping i…
Correlates of depression and anxiety among homeless adults with latent tuberculosis infection
Homeless persons have disproportionate rates of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). LTBI treatment can prevent and reduce active tuberculosis spread. We examined associations between mental health, social support, and perceptions of general health in 50 LTBI-positive, homeless adults enrolled in LTBI treatment. Depression and anxiety prevalence were 40% and 48%, respectively. Depression was negatively associated with general health, positive so…
Association Between Maternal HIV Stigma Among South Indian Mothers Living with HIV and the CD4 Count of Children Living with HIV
HIV stigma takes a multidimensional toll on a mother's ability to care for herself and subsequently may impact her ability to care for her child, particularly when mother and child are seroconcordant. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted to examine the association between maternal HIV stigma and child CD4 count in rural India. We assessed 108 mother-child dyads and found that a one-unit increase in community stigma fear decreased child CD4 co…
Mental health of women living with HIV and its impact on child development in Andhra Pradesh, India

Data for these analyses come from several waves of interviews of 600 WLWH in the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, India. These women were enrolled in a 2×2 factorial clinical…
Engaging the Community in Designing a Hepatitis C Virus Treatment Program for Adults Experiencing Homelessness
Despite the availability of cure for hepatitis C virus (HCV), people experiencing homelessness (PEH) are challenged with initiating and completing HCV treatment. The design of culturally sensitive HCV treatment programs is lacking. The objective was to employ community-based participatory research methods to understand perceptions of HCV-positive PEH, and providers, on the design and delivery of a culturally sensitive, nurse-led community health …
Acceptability and Feasibility of a Nurse-Led, Community Health Worker Partnered Latent Tuberculosis Medication Adherence Model for Homeless Adults
Homeless adults are at increased risk of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), which can lead to active tuberculosis (TB) disease. The purpose of this study was to assess acceptability and feasibility of a six-month, nurse-led, community health worker-partnered short-course treatment (3HP) LTBI adherence model for a high risk, LTBI positive, homeless population. Informed by our community advisory board (CAB) and community-based participatory rese…
Depression, social support, and stigma as predictors of quality of life over time
Quality of life (QOL) is associated with better outcomes in HIV/AIDS populations. We explored predictors of improved QOL over time in 600 Women Living with HIV/AIDS (WLH/A) in India [mean age = 34.31, SD = 6.97], enrolled in a nurse-led-Asha (Accredited Social Health Activist) intervention. Trained local interviewers ascertained self-report data at baseline and six-month follow-up (post-intervention). Latent Class Analysis (LCA) identified conste…

Understanding Supportive Care Factors Among African American Breast Cancer Survivors
Introduction: Comprehensive breast cancer care includes not only diagnosis, staging, and treatment of cancer but also assessment and management of the physical, psychological, social, and informational needs, collectively known as supportive care. She Decides
The number of HIV-AIDS cases among African American women (AAW) continues to rise. AAW currently account for about 65% of AIDS diagnoses among women in the United States. Furthermore, among AAW living with HIV-AIDS, heterosexual transmission remains the leading cause of HIV spread. Indeed, examining AAWs sex partner selection patterns will be a key step in understanding how to support HIV prevention for this population. A grounded-theory study wa…

Art Messaging to Engage Homeless Young Adults
The findings indicate that in addition to messages communicating the need to prevent or reduce drug and alcohol use, homeless young adults respond to messages that remind them of goals and dreams they once had for their future, and to content that is personal, real, and truthful. Our research indicates that messages that reinforce protective factors such as hope for the future and self-esteem may be as important to homeless young adults as inform…

Perception of Health Status by Homeless US Veterans
Perceptions of health status among 331 homeless veterans and homeless nonveterans were examined. Homeless veterans were significantly less apt to perceive their health as fair/poor (8%) compared to non-veteran homeless men (19%).
