  • Hunting and Faunal Consumption Among Herders of Northwestern Patagonia

Open Access•C Otaola, Wolverton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2025

This article examines the dietary patterns of herders in central-western Argentina, known as puesteros (local herders). We investigate how changes in land use, urbanization, and hunting restrictions have affected traditional puestero herding practices and the contributions of wild and domesticated animals to their diets. The study focuses on two research questions: (1) Has the growth of urban economies and transportation infrastructure in central…

  • Vertebrate Prey Accumulations by the Crested Caracara ( Caracara plancus , Aves

Open Access•N M Guardia, Nicolás Guardia et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Taphonomic research is essential for understanding the formation and dynamics of archaeological and palaeontological records. We present a multi‐taxa neo‐taphonomic analysis of prey remains accumulated by the crested caracara (carancho) ( Caracara plancus ) in a site located within the city of Mendoza, the main urban area of central western Argentina. We developed a taphonomic analysis with the aim of elucidating traces and patterns attributable …

This paper presents the results of the controlled observation of Rhea eggshells and complete carcasses of Zaedyus pichiy (pichi or dwarf armadillo) deposited in a taphonomic experimentation corral. This work compares the degree and speed of burial and weathering for both types of records. In the case of armadillos, we analyzed the differences between the preservation of the dermal plates and the rest of the skeleton. In the case of Rhea eggshells…

  • Land-use and ceramics in the Andean highlands of Patagonia, Argentina

    Open Access•Fernando R Franchetti, Loukas Barton et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2024

The aim of this paper is to study the use of ceramics of small-scale societies during the late Holocene in northern Patagonia. The technological investment model predicts that use-time and utility will determine the investment spent in ceramics. We explore how ceramics were used in short-term camps and aggregation sites during summer at high elevations, and residential camps during winter at lower elevations. To test the investment in ceramics we…

  • Ancient DNA reveals population trends of Lesser Rhea ( Rhea pennata ) in Northwestern Patagonia

Open Access•Cinthia Carolina Abbona, Jeff Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2024•References: 22

The Lesser Rhea ( Rhea pennata ), a large flightless bird native to South America, held historical significance as a vital resource for Patagonian hunter–gatherer societies. Despite the species' cultural and ecological importance, the historical population dynamics of R. pennata remain poorly understood. Although present in the archaeological record, its abundance is not consistently documented and the reasons remain unclear. This study investiga…

  • Strix chacoensis (Aves

    Open Access•J Mignino, José Manuel López et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 9

The objective of this study is to characterize the taphonomic signature of Strix chacoensis in bone and tooth remains of microvertebrates (birds and micromammals). The chaco owl is a bird of prey whose diet and bone modification patterns are little known. In a sample of 41 pellets, an unusual proportion of bird remains over mammal remains was observed. We evaluate the ecological implications of this phenomenon, which could designate Strix chacoen…

  • El uso de canteras en el valle del Diamante

    Open Access•Fernando R Franchetti, C Otaola et al.•ARTICLE•Comechingonia Revista de…•2024•References: 24

The distributional studies in the Diamante valley, northwestern Patagonia, allowed the comparison in the use of space between ecological zones, with robust results in piedmont and highlands. The analysis of densities of archaeological materials and the lithic organization helped to detect presence of sources of basalts, cryptocrystalline and other raw materials. The piedmont showed more presence of basalt secondary sources and a source of rhyolit…

In this paper we evaluate the role of human strategies in the Andean Piedmont from northern Patagonia across the Holocene. Specifically, we present the analysis of the Early Holocene-Late Holocene archaeological record of Salamanca cave (Mendoza-Argentina). We identified technological changes that occurred during the Late Holocene and the implications of a human occupation hiatus in the Middle Holocene. We follow a multiproxy approach by the anal…

    Open Access•C Otaola, M A Giardina et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 53

A biogeographic model used to describe human peopling of southern Mendoza, central western Argentina, proposed an intensification process activated by an increase in population growth rate during the Late Holocene. During this process, high-ranked resources at the surroundings of residential camps were depleted, and hunter-gatherers broadened their diet by incorporating a larger number of low-ranked prey and domesticated plant resources. In this …

Open Access•Wolverton, Steve Wolverton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnobiology•2015

Different but complementary foraging adaptations existed in the Payunia volcanic and the Andean highland (or mountain) subregions of southern Mendoza, Argentina during the late Holocene. We employ an evolutionary ecological perspective to study the zooarchaeology of foraging adaptations after 4000 BP. Seasonal exploitation of guanaco ( Lama guanicoe Müller) in the mountains appears to have been sustainable, which relates to high productivity of m…

Rheidae eggshells are abundant in the archaeological record of west central Argentina. Eggs were more important in human diet than the bird meat itself, as with many other Ratite species around the world. Currently, two species inhabit the south and central areas of Argentina and Chile (Rhea pennata and Rhea americana), with different geographical distributions and diet but with similar behaviour. In this paper, we use δ13C and δ18O isotopes from…
