Beyond digital repression
Over the past few years, governments have been using AI-based surveillance systems a crescent amount worldwide. Disguised as ‘smart’ methods for crime control, they have spread among democracies under the rule of radical right governments. Their employment, aligned with institutional and democratic disruptions, establishes forms of repression against those who challenge these governments. This study aims to discuss and broaden the emerging concep…
Beyond Instrumentarianism
Although critical of contemporary capitalism, and the injustices and asymmetries derived from it, current conceptualisations of ‘surveillance capitalism’ have been developed from within the Global North, paying little attention to the effects and ramifications of this new phase of capitalism for the global periphery. This text looks at this phenomenon from the Global South, emphasising the concept not as a territorial marker but contingent on soc…
Fear as a product, continuum as a solution
This paper focuses on the diffusion of zero tolerance policing in Brazil. It argues that the global diffusion of security practices and technologies occurs through a multiplicity of channels operated by private security companies. Based on a multi-sited ethnography of electronic security fairs in São Paulo and a discourse analysis of publications distributed in these fairs, the paper discusses how these actors perform a semantic continuum between…
Tais arg…
The Cambridge Handbook of Race and Surveillance
Featuring chapters authored by leading scholars in the fields of criminology, critical race studies, history, and more, The Cambridge Handbook of Race and Surveillance cuts across history and geography to provide a detailed examination of how race and surveillance intersect throughout space and time. The volume reviews surveillance technology from the days of colonial conquest to the digital era, focusing on countries such as the United States, C…
Colonialism’s Uneasy Legacy
Roaming around in São Paulo can be quite a stimulating experience: The city’s bustling rhythm, its effervescent cultural life, and its ethnic heterogeneity leave little room for doubt as to why Brazil’s largest city is generally considered South America’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan metropolis. Meanwhile, the city’s “tough concrete poetry” 1 also bespeaks a configuration in which human bodies are dwarfed and citizens are constantly reminded of …
Terrestrial politics and body-territory
Researchers have argued that data colonialism is paving the way for a new stage of capitalism, defined as the result of the appropriation and trade of “datafied” human experience (Couldry and Mejias 2019). While we agree that data colonialism normalizes the exploitation of human beings through data, we also contend that the analysis of the materiality of this exploitation should be extended to both bodies and territories. There is a research gap …
Viral surveillance
In the context of COVID-19 pandemics, Brazilian cities implemented social isolation policies and deployed digital systems to monitor urban mobility. This article addresses the setting of two digital technologies based on massive cell-phone data collection by private companies in São Paulo state. We relied on secondary data from multiple sources (press conferences, interviews, newspaper articles, public documents), complemented by primary data fro…
Exploring the relationship between crypto AG and the CIA in the use of rigged encryption machines for espionage in Brazil
In this article, we explore how the United States developed an intelligence strategy that, since the Cold War, has been based on relationships with private high-tech companies. Specifically, we analyse documents that demonstrate that the Swiss company Crypto AG – a supplier of cryptographic equipment to more than 120 countries – was controlled by the CIA. We analyse the implications of this for Brazil, in a comparative perspective with the experi…
Race and Criminology through the lens of a sociologist
Interview with Natalie Byfield, sociologist and associate professor at St. John's University, Queens
Apresentação do Dossiê
Texto introdutório do dossiê "Vigilância, controle e novas tecnologias
No Boots on the Ground’
Since 2004, the US Air Force (USAF) and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) have persecuted insurgents in Somalia, Yemen and Pakistan with armed drones. Despite its alleged efficiency, this practice has been widely criticised on the grounds that it contravenes international humanitarian law. In order to understand the controversies involving this practice, we examine how this new technology was linked to and allowed the emergence of a new US in…
The “Surgical” Legitimacy of Drone Strikes? Issues of Sovereignty and Human Rights in the Use of Unmanned Aerial Systems in Pakistan
The Revolution in Military Affairs had an important role in providing the United States Armed Forces the technical instruments necessary to conduct high-risky operations in the context of Irregular Warfare. The development of these instruments, such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), allowed the emergence of a discourse of surgical and lean wars by the George W. Bush and Barack Obama administrations, whose legitimacy of the interventions were rel…
