Research gaps and challenges for impact-based forecasts and warnings
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has called for more meaningful warnings to help reduce the impacts of weather-related events. Impact-based forecasts and warnings (IBFW) are being developed by forecasting agencies globally to meet this call. However, there are many challenges facing those implementing such systems. The WMO World Weather Research Programme High Impact Weather project sought to understand the future direction of research…
Stimulant or Depressant? Resource-Related Income Shocks and Conflict
We provide evidence on the mechanisms linking resource-related income shocks to conflict, focusing on illegal crops. We hypothesize that the degree of group competition over resources and the extent of law enforcement explain whether opportunity cost or contest effects dominate. Combining temporal variation in international drug prices with spatial variation in the suitability to produce opium, we show that higher prices increase household living…
Dynamic Social Vulnerability Mapping Using Facebook Data
Assessing populations exposed to climate change impacts traditionally relies upon census data estimations. Yet, these only provide a static picture of risk since censuses are often undertaken and released over long periods and thus cannot be updated regularly. In this study, we investigate how to leverage multi‐temporal geolocated social media data from Meta‐Facebook and assess spatio‐temporal variations of population exposure and vulnerability t…
Climate Change Impact Chains
Shifting from effect-oriented toward cause-oriented and systemic approaches in sustainable climate change adaptation requires a solid understanding of the climate-related and societal causes behind climate risks. Thus, capturing, systemizing, and prioritizing factors contributing to climate risks are essential for developing cause-oriented climate risk and vulnerability assessments (CRVA). Impact chains (IC) are conceptual models used to capture …
Science for Loss and Damage. Findings and Propositions
The debate on “Loss and Damage” (L&D) has gained traction over the last few years. Supported by growing scientific evidence of anthropogenic climate change amplifying frequency, intensity and duration of climate-related hazards as well as observed increases in climate-related impacts and risks in many regions, the “Warsaw International Mechanism for Loss and Damage” was established in 2013 and further supported through the Paris Agreement in 2015…
Climate vulnerability mapping
Maps synthesizing climate, biophysical and socioeconomic data have become part of the standard tool‐kit for communicating the risks of climate change to society. Vulnerability maps are used to direct attention to geographic areas where impacts on society are expected to be greatest and that may therefore require adaptation interventions. Under the Green Climate Fund and other bilateral climate adaptation funding mechanisms, donors are investing b…
Explaining Accessibility and Satisfaction Related to Healthcare
Accessibility and satisfaction related to healthcare services are conceived as multidimensional concepts. These concepts can be studied using objective and subjective measures. In this study, we created two indices: a composite healthcare accessibility index (CHCA) and a composite healthcare satisfaction index (CHCS). To calculate the CHCA index we used three indicators based on three components of multidimensional healthcare accessibility: avail…
Assessment of Vulnerability to Natural Hazards
"Reducing risk that emerges from hazards of natural origin and societal vulnerability is a key challenge for the development of more resilient communities and the overall goal of sustainable development. Newest global assessment reports (GAR 2011, Welle et al. 2012; IPCC 2013) underscore that risk reduction and resilience building remains a key challenge for developing and developed countries alike particularly due to the increasing exposure of p…
Participatory mapping of flood hazard risk in Munamicua, District of Búzi, Mozambique
Detailed maps, appropriate for decision making at the local level are outdated or currently not available in Mozambique. The community map presented in this paper is built on participatory mapping and Participatory GIS practices (especially photo mapping) and links to advanced spatial analysis in the context of disaster risk reduction and flood hazard assessment. Based on a very high-resolution satellite imagery, community members mapped differen…
Geons – domain-specific regionalization of space
The design of methods and tools to build adequate representations of complex geographical phenomena in a way that spatial patterns are emphasized is one of the core objectives of GIScience. In this paper, we build on the concept of geons as a strategy to represent and analyze latent spatial phenomena across different geographical scales (local, national, regional) incorporating domain-specific expert knowledge. Focusing on two types, we illustrat…
