  • Effects of Grammatical Information on Word Predictability

Open Access•Percy H Tannenbaum, Frederick Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•1969

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether providing a respondent with the designation of the grammatical form class of words deleted from prose contexts would affect his performance in a word prediction task. Word replacements were obtained under conditions where such designations were or were not provided. The results were analyzed in terms of whether response words corresponded in grammatical form class with deleted items (FC-s…

  • Effects of Feedback Availability Upon Generation of Left- and Right-Branching Sentence Structures

    Open Access•Percy H Tannenbaum, Barbara Sundene Wood et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1968•Cited by: 1•References: 8

It was reasoned that the capacity of short-term memory places limitations upon the syntactic structures produced by the human speaker, but that such limitations would be compensated for if the encoder had a continuous record (feedback) of his production during the creation of a sentence. Accordingly, this experiment involved having subjects create left-branching and right-branching sentence patterns (the former presumed to impose more demands upo…

  • Prompted Word Replacement in Active and Passive Sentences

    Open Access•Percy H Tannenbaum, Frederick Williams•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1968•References: 15

A conceptual focus formulation developed in a prior study of encoding of active and passive sentences led to predictions concerning how such sentences are stored and their main semantic units are retrieved from memory. The formulation posed a dominant subject-verb linkage in active sentences but an object-verb linkage characterizing passive sentences. Individuals were presented with either the subject, or verb, or object of previous exposed sente…

  • Hesitation Phenomena and Related Encoding Characteristics in Speech and Typewriting

    Open Access•Percy H Tannenbaum, Frederick Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1967•Cited by: 1•References: 11

Intercorrelations among various hesitation phenomena, production variables, and message characteristics found in spoken responses were factor analysed in an attempt to establish a parsimonious description of basic attributes underlying encoding behaviour. For comparative purposes, a similar analysis was conducted on measures obtained from typewritten messages. The four factors found in the spoken messages were interpreted as : time spent in cogni…

  • On the Measurement of Socialization

    Percy H Tannenbaum, Jack M Mcleod•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•1967•Cited by: 3

The study of socialization has lacked a consistent methodology that would permit comparisons among studies. More general and widely applicable measures are needed if the process of socialization is to be fully and appropriately investigated. This paper presents a set of related measures indexing various aspects of cognitive change as part of the socialization process

  • Effects of Combining Congruity Principle Strategies for the Reduction of Persuasion

    Percy H Tannenbaum, Eleanor L Norris•ARTICLE•Sociometry•1965•Cited by: 6

Several specific strategies for the reduction of persuasion are suggested by the principle of congruity as being independent in their effects. It was thus reasoned that combining two such non-redundant treatments would be more effective in reducing the degree of attitude change than using either by itself. This proposition was tested under both massed-i.e., both strategies presented either before (immunization) or after (restoration) a belief att…

  • Effects of Shared Referential Experience Upon Encoder-Decoder Agreement

Open Access•Ruth Anne Clark, Frederick Williams et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1965•Cited by: 1•References: 11

The effects of referential experience upon encoder-decoder agreement were studied by presenting decoders with stimuli (abstract paintings) originally used to elicit the messages. Agreement was assessed in terms of two measures of word predictability—verbatim replacement and replacement of words of the same grammatical form classes as the deleted items. Results indicated that referential experience enhanced verbatim replacement and more for lexica…

  • Effects of Feedback on Oral Encoding Behaviour

    Open Access•Walter Stolz, Walter S Stolz et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Speech•1963•Cited by: 1•References: 13

The effect of knowledge of performance on oral encoding facility was investigated. Subjects were placed in an oral examination situation and were provided with ostensibly authentic (but actually manipulated) evaluations of their performance while they answered questions. Dependent variables included rate and duration of various hesitation phenomena, voice loudness, and stage fright. Positive feedback was found to have a slight but facilitative ef…

  • Sensationalism

    Open Access•Percy H Tannenbaum, Mervin D Lynch•ARTICLE•Journalism Quarterly•1962•Cited by: 1

The authors describe an effort to isolate and identify one or more key message attribute clusters which relate to the judgment of sensationalism, as the latter is indexed by their Sendex technique. Their aim is to find a good objective measure for the study of sensationalistic journalism

  • The Effects of Bylines on Attitude Change

  • Initial Attitude Toward Source and Concept as Factors in Attitude Change Through Communication

    Percy H Tannenbaum•ARTICLE•Public Opinion Quarterly•1956•Cited by: 18

Though there have been many studies of attitude change through communication, but little experimentation has been done on the variables controlling the attitude change of a given communication. In the study reported here, the author investigated the effects on the amount of change of the original attitudes of the audience. He demonstrates that the attitudes toward source and concept affect the amount of change, and describes the nature of the fun…

The purpose of the present paper is to report the findings of this research in relation to other evidence and within the framework of the general indexing process.
