The Health Benefits of Financial Inclusion
The impact of financial inclusion on health have largely remained underexplored in the existing literature, particularly in the ASEAN nations. This study is conducted to examine this impact using a sample of 14,815 observations collected from (i) the Gallup World Poll and the (ii) the World Bank Global Findex databases. Various estimation techniques, including (i)Lewbel’s (2012) IV estimations, and mediation analysis are utilized in this study. T…
The Effect of Financial Inclusion on Household Wealth in Vietnam
Financial inclusion is increasingly recognized as a vital instrument for promoting economic development and reducing inequality, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Yet, there is limited research on the relationship between financial inclusion and wealth accumulation, especially in developing countries like Vietnam. The moderating role of gender in this relationship is also underexplored. As such, this study examines the effect of fin…
Has the Free‐Rider Problem Been Improved in Nato ? Evidence From a Novel TVP ‐ VAR ‐Based Connectedness Approach
Previous studies have offered static evidence of free‐riding behavior in military alliances; however, dynamic evidence remains largely unexplored. To address this gap, this study employs a time‐varying parameter vector autoregressive (TVP‐VAR) connectedness approach. This method provides dynamic insights, allowing us to identify unusual shifts in military spending dependence among NATO member states over time. Using this method, we observe a sign…
Does Financial Literacy Improve Life Satisfaction? Robust Evidence From Several Approaches
This study examines the causal impacts of financial literacy on current and future life satisfaction. We use a cross‐sectional dataset combined from two unique datasets, including the S&P's Global Financial Literacy Survey and Gallup World Poll for 138 countries. Our results indicate that financial literacy is positively associated with life satisfaction. Unlike previous studies, we establish the causal impacts of financial literacy on life satis…
The role of renewable energy in the energy–growth–emission nexus in the Asean region
Global liquidity spillovers in the Asia–Pacific region
This research investigates the spillovers of global liquidity to Asia–Pacific countries, focusing on the contradictory effects of policy-driven liquidity created by monetary stances in advanced economies and market-driven liquidity generated by the private banking sector. Our findings stand in sharp contrast to previous studies, showing that shifts in macro-financial indicators in Asia–Pacific economies are predominantly influenced by market-driv…

The Determinants of Internal Migration in an Emerging Market
Internal migration has been a challenging issue for Vietnam in the past three decades, with swift industrialization and urbanization at the two ends of the country—the capital city, Hanoi, in the north and the largest city, Ho Chi Minh City, in the south. This study identifies the determinants of internal migration with a focus on the characteristics of Vietnamese households and the household heads, together with their living conditions. A logit …
Do Urbanization and Industrialization Deteriorate Environmental Quality? Empirical Evidence from Vietnam
Vietnam has transitioned from one of the poorest countries globally into a middle-income nation in three decades since the 1986 Economic Renovation (Doi Moi). However, this economic reform miracle has been widely supported by extensive urbanization and industrialization, leading to severe deterioration in environmental quality. While the effect of economic growth on environmental degradation has been extensively investigated, previous studies on V…
An Untapped Instrument in the Fight Against Poverty
The World Bank assessed that meeting the goal of eradicating extreme poverty by 2030 appears to be challenging (or even impossible) for the world. This observation requires an urgent need for policymakers to explore potent instruments to combat poverty globally. Numerous studies have examined various determinants of poverty. However, financial literacy—a relatively new concept—remains underexplored, especially on a global scale. As such, this stu…
Can local and global geopolitical risk predict governments' military spending behaviour? International evidence
Geopolitical risk, encompassing wars, terrorism, and tensions between states, exerts a significant impact on global affairs. Previous studies have examined the relationship between geopolitical risk and military spending. However, these studies were limited by certain shortcomings in the measurement tools used to assess geopolitical risk. The introduction of a new geopolitical risk index, leveraging textual analysis technology, offers a way to ov…
Chief Executive Officer's national culture and bank risk‐taking behavior
This paper examines the effect of the national culture of the chief executive officers (CEOs) on their risk‐taking behavior in managing the banks, leading to banks' instability using a sample of 805 CEOs for 517 commercial banks in 33 countries from 2011 to 2017. Our empirical results confirm that bank risk‐taking behavior is negatively associated with the national culture of the CEOs who score high on the individualistic culture dimension. We al…
Educational Attainment, Household Income and Wealth Accumulation in Vietnam
This study examines the effects of educational attainment and household income on wealth accumulation in Vietnam using various Vietnam Household Living Standards Surveys (VHLSSs) in 2008, 2018 and 2020. We use the threshold regression to separate households into different groups depending on their assets. We find that owning a university degree is optimal to maximize wealth accumulation for households in 2008. However, post-graduate qualification…
Renewable Energy, Urbanization, Financial Development and Environmental Degradation in the Asean Countries
The ASEAN countries have increasingly become a new economic force in the global economy. Economic growth and development have significantly improved living standards. However, environmental degradation in the region has been significantly deteriorating. This study examines the long-term effects of renewable energy consumption, urbanization and financial development on environmental degradation in ASEAN countries from 1995 to 2020. Various econome…
Determinants of Wealth Outcomes in Female-Headed Households in Vietnam
This article uses data from the 2014 Vietnamese Household Living Standards Survey to compare the wealth outcome of Vietnamese female-headed households (FHH) to that of their male counterparts. The study takes an open position on the possible link between being a female head of the household and economic outcomes, focusing on heterogeneity among FHHs. The findings confirm that Vietnam has a small but significant group of married FHHs who have rela…
The geopolitical risk spillovers across BRICS countries
This paper investigates the geopolitical risk spillovers among BRICS countries during the 1985–2022 period. We adopt the novel quantile frequency connectedness approach, which allows us to examine the risk transmission by frequency and quantile. The geopolitical risks spread more intensely among BRICS countries during extreme circumstances. The long‐term geopolitical risk spillovers are the main contributors to the overall spillovers. Additionall…

Renewable energy and population growth for sustainable development in the Southeast Asian countries
The energy–environment–growth nexus has been examined for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region, mainly using time series data. However, the important role of renewable energy and population has largely been ignored in previous studies. As such, this study is conducted to investigate a causal link between renewable energy usage, population, carbon dioxide emissions, and economic growth. In addition, a relatively new and advanc…
Urbanization and the Consumption of Fossil Energy Sources in the Emerging Southeast Asian Countries
Fossil energy consumption is considered a source of environmental degradation. While the demand for fossil energy increases during the process of urbanization, different nations rely upon different sources of fossil energy. As such, a one-size-fits-all approach in reducing the consumption of fossil fuels to improve the quality of the environment is neither logical, nor practical. This study investigates the short-term and long-term effects of urb…
Sustainable agriculture & energy in the U.S
The world has been witnessing the dual crises from the Covid-19 pandemic since 2019: (i) the economic crisis; and (ii) the health crisis. During crisis, it is important to revisit the sustainability of two of the most important policies on agriculture and energy for any country. Corn has played an increasingly important role in the U.S. agricultural market. As of 2018, corn accounts for about 95 per cent of the U.S. total feed grain. As such, cor…
The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Environment Degradation
This study is conducted to examine the concerns of the foreign direct investment (FDI) causing environment degradation and also to test the validity of the traditional Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in the context of emerging markets in the Asian region. Data of these countries from 1980-2016 are utilised. This study employs panel cointegration Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS), which treats the endogeneity problem, and its estimat…
Fiscal decentralisation in Vietnam
In this paper, fiscal decentralisation in Vietnam is examined using a new fiscal decentralisation index, which accounts for both the fiscal autonomy and fiscal importance of subnational governments as developed in the work by D. Vo (Fiscal decentralisation indices: a comparison of two approaches. Rivista di diritto finanziario e scienza delle finanze LXVII, 3 (I), 2008, 295–323).
