This article deals with the lexicography of Anglo‐Indian English; specifically it examines both past and contemporary work in the style of dictionary known as the ‘dictionary on historical principles’. The Prevalence and Health Implications of Concha Bullosa in a Population from Mediaeval England
Concha bullosa is hypertrophy of the middle nasal concha attributable to its pneumatisation. It is considered to be the most common anatomical variant of the ostiomeatal complex, but it has been little studied in skeletal populations. Since Yule and Burnell’s first edition of their glossary of Anglo-Indian English in 1886, the term ‘Hobson-Jobson’ has been part of the English language. It was already an established Anglo-Indian English word, but was given a new life, and new meanings, by Yule and Burnell. Accounts of the word in both lexicography and popular works are still almost entirely based on an uncritical replication of the information provided by Yule and Burnell. That…
Measurement of attitudes and behaviors in public health surveys
We divided 900 general practitioners into two groups: one group received a questionnaire measuring both attitudes and behaviors toward preventive aspects of medical care, while the other received two separate questionnaires--one measuring behaviors, and one measuring attitudes. Response rates of the two groups were similar. Respondents in the first group retrieved their answer to the attitudinal items when responding to behavioral items, increasi…
Determining growth faltering with a tracking score
A tracking score for determining growth faltering in children was developed and tested. A graphical method was developed for classifying by visual inspection whether or not a given child had faltered in growth. This method was used to classify all children in a sample of Guatemalan children as to faltering in both weight and length between 9 and 24 months of age; 80 of 345 children had faltered in weight, and 44 of 336 children had faltered in le…
Increasing response rates in physicians' mail surveys
It is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain high response rates in physicians' mail surveys. In 1983-84, we tested the effectiveness of two techniques among 604 Quebec physicians who had not responded to an initial letter. A handwritten thank you note at the bottom of the letter accompanying the questionnaire and a more personalized mailout package increased response rates by 40.7 per cent and 53.1 per cent, respectively, compared to control …
