  • Online discussion or authentic dialogue? How design affects discussions in two alternative types of online forums

Open Access•Glenn Smith, Glenn G Smith et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•2025

Authentic dialogue demands that we respond, interpret and sometimes disagree with others' ideas—a key component of participation in a democratic society. Yet the sharing and uptake of different ideas can be hampered by traditional online platforms which divide students into isolated threads. To tackle this issue, we introduce two novel online forums designed to foster engagement and idea exchange: a linear chat, akin to SMS, and a collaborative w…

  • Dialogue by Design

    Open Access•Michael B Sherry, Glenn Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent & Adult…•2025

Authentic dialogue, in which citizens engage with different perspectives using evidence, is integral to participation in a democratic, literate society. Yet participants in classroom conversations and in public forums often talk past each other rather than taking up what others have written or said. How might the design of alternative online discussion forums enhance dialogue among secondary students? Prior research has suggested that practice wi…

  • Automated analysis of postings in fourth grade online discussions to help teachers keep students on-track

    Open Access•Slavko Žitnik, Glenn Smith•ARTICLE•Interactive Learning Environments•2024

In the recent, and ongoing, Covid-19 pandemic, remote or online K-12 schooling became the norm. Even if the pandemic tails off somewhat, remote K-12 schooling will likely remain more frequent than it was before the pandemic. A mainstay technique of online learning, at least at the college and graduate level, has been the online discussion. Since it does afford the potential for meaningful learner-learner and instructor-learner interaction, which …

  • High School Students’ Motivation to Learn Climate Change Science through Educational Computer Games

    Open Access•Metin Beşaltı, Glenn Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Simulation & Gaming•2024

Background Teaching climate change is difficult. Its complexity spans many subjects, often taught disjointedly. Many climate change effects are not immediately observable, making it hard for students to connect to it personally. Aim This study investigates how we can spark high school students’ interest in learning about climate change using educational computer games. Method We adopted a qualitative case research design to understand how games b…

    Glenn Smith•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2024

[A note from the editors: this review is a condensation of an as yet unpublished article (www.hcommons.org/deposits/item/hc:57909/) written in collaboration with the eminent Chinese art historian and curator Gao Minglu.]“I am neither an art historian nor art critic, and this work doesn’t pretend to belong to those fields.” This statement appears in Yuk Hui’s preface to his landmark 2021 Art and Cosmotechnics; and—true to his word—Hui has written …

  • The Value of Drawing Instruction in the Visual Arts and Across Curricula

    Glenn Smith, Glenn E Smith•ARTICLE•Leonardo•2022

With the “death of drawing” proclaimed to us from all sides—but, at the same time, enmeshed within an intensely visual culture, and therefore continuing to be receptive to the all-encompassing “cognitive, creative, and communicative” possibilities inherent in putting pencil to paper—we are delighted to discover this historical beacon on page 114 of the volume under review: Passed into law by its legislature five years after the end of the Civil W…

  • Professional autonomy and surveillance

    Open Access•Mark Exworthy, Jonathan Gabe et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 15

Professional autonomy has come under greater scrutiny due to managerialism, consumerism, information and communication technologies (ICT), and the changing composition of professions themselves. This scrutiny is often portrayed as a tension between professional and managerial logics. Recently, medical autonomy has increasingly been shaped in terms of transparency, where publication of clinical performance (via ICT) might be a more pervasive form …

  • Narratives of continuity among older people with late stage chronic kidney disease who decline dialysis

    Open Access•Henry Llewellyn, Joe Low et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2014•Cited by: 7•References: 11

Chronic and life-threatening conditions are widely thought to shatter the lives of those affected. In this article, we examine the accounts of 19 older people diagnosed with late stage chronic kidney disease who declined dialysis. Accounts were collected through in-depth interview in the United Kingdom (March-November, 2010). Drawing on a phenomenological approach, we focus particularly on the embodied and lived experience of the condition and on…

  • The experiences of close persons caring for people with chronic kidney disease stage 5 on conservative kidney management

    Open Access•Joe Low, Jason Myers et al.•ARTICLE•Health An Interdisciplinary…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Chronic kidney disease stage 5 is a global health challenge in the context of population ageing across the world. The range of treatment options available to patients at all ages has increased and includes transplantation and dialysis. However, these options are often seen as inappropriate for older frailer patients who are now offered the option of conservative kidney management, which is presented as a non-invasive alternative to dialysis, invo…

  • Towards a Sociology of Disclosure

    Open Access•Jonathan Gabe, Mark Exworthy et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 23

Despite the increasingly widespread emphasis on the need for transparency in health‐care and elsewhere, there is limited evidence regarding the consequences of disclosing medical performance data. The evidence is disparate and has not been synthesised in a coherent way. This paper focuses on surgical performance, whose measurement is generally often seen as straight forward. It begins by outlining the context for understanding the publication of …

    Open Access•Zoe J-L Hildon, Zoe Hildon et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2008•Cited by: 9•References: 25

This mixed-methods study looks at the relationship between adversity and resilience. It examines the dynamics of protection in a sub-sample of the Boyd Orr cohort that are aged between 70 and 80 years of age (n = 139). We used a questionnaire and activity diaries to gather a range of quantitative data, and interviews using lifegrids to explore past and present experiences of adversity. Sampling of 32 individuals was based on resilient and vulnera…

  • Student attrition in mathematics e-learning

Open Access•Glenn Smith, Glenn Gordon Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Australasian Journal of…•2005

Qualitative studies indicate that mathematics does not work well in e-learning. The current study used quantitative methods to investigate more objectively the extent of problems with mathematics in e-learning. The authors used student attrition as a simple measure of student satisfaction and course viability in two studies, one investigating attrition in e-learning and a second comparison study of attrition in face to face courses. In e-learning…

  • Incidence of delayed stress disorder among Vietnam era veterans

Robert L LaGuardia, Glenn Smith et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•1983•References: 16

Recent studies concluded that a significant number of Vietnam era veterans suffer now from a service-related stress disorder. This paper suggests that a priming artifact may have operated in many such studies to confound an understanding of the nature and estimate of the disorder. Findings of a study designed to test the effect of priming on veterans' self-ratings support the hypothesis that veterans, particularly noncombat veterans, tend to rate…
