The concept of 'community' is central to disaster risk reduction, yet it remains theoretically underdeveloped and inconsistently applied across disciplines and practice. The personal is political was a term used in the early days of the contemporary women's movement to mean that if something was happening to you, it was happening to other women too. What appeared to be a personal issue was actually a political one that occurred because of unequal gender relations. Information seeking in a flood
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to address the gaps in knowledge about how people get information in a flood and what they want to know. Design/methodology/approach A total of 27 people were interviewed from two communities that suffered flooding in the 12 months before the interviews. Slow‐moving flood and flash flood were covered. Data from a survey of 506 women undergoing abortion at a family planning clinic in Illinois suggest that the assumption that spousal notification promotes marital harmony is plausible only for the subset of women whose marriages are already harmonious.
