  • The Burial from Aleti Tunu Bibi Cave, Atauro Island, East Timor

    Anne-Marie Bacon, Anne‐marie Bacon et al.•ARTICLE•Asian perspectives•2025

The Aleti Tunu Bibi cave, located on the small volcanic island of Atauro close to the island of Timor, is a sacred site for the region's inhabitants. The cave's archaeological potential was revealed in 2015 with the discovery of artifacts, rock art depicting marine fauna (mammals and reptiles), human remains, and a few remains of marine and terrestrial fauna. New material discovered in 2017 included sporadic remains of marine fauna, goats and pig…

  • Conflict, Defensive Sites and Oral Tradition

    Open Access•Dominique Guillaud, Jean‐christophe Galipaud et al.•ARTICLE•Archipel•2024•References: 15

Defensive sites are particularly numerous in a small island such as Atauro. Their location and survey give a glimpse of the diversity of their configurations: from naturally defensive sites that were barely arranged, to forts displaying several successive walls. The oral information given by the population provides insights on the historical contexts of the construction of these sites, on their current place in the landscapes and territories, and…

  • Timorese archaeobotany

    Alexandra Ribeny, Emilie Dotte-Sarout et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Archaeology•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 29

This paper details an anthracological pilot study for the Lepu-Kina rockshelter site (AT-7), located on Atauro Island, East Timor and considers the implications of the preliminary results for the archaeology of the region. Archaeological wood charcoal analysis can reveal aspects of fuel selection, human landscape modifications and management of vegetal resources. The difficulties inherent in tropical archaeobotany have, however, constrained anthr…

  • Ritual tooth ablation and the Austronesian expansion

    R L Kinaston, T Koesbardiati et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Island and Coastal…•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 44

Ritual tooth ablation, the intentional removal of teeth, is a highly visible form of body modification that can signal group identity and mark certain life events, such as marriage. The widespread occurrence of the practice in Asia appears to have begun in the Neolithic period and in some areas, such as Taiwan, continued until the ethnographic present. We aim to use a biocultural approach to investigate the significance of tooth ablation in Indon…

  • The prehistoric peopling of Southeast Asia

Open Access•Hugh McColl, Fernando Racimo et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2018

Ancient migrations in Southeast Asia The past movements and peopling of Southeast Asia have been poorly represented in ancient DNA studies (see the Perspective by Bellwood). Lipson et al. generated sequences from people inhabiting Southeast Asia from about 1700 to 4100 years ago. Screening of more than a hundred individuals from five sites yielded ancient DNA from 18 individuals. Comparisons with present-day populations suggest two waves of mixin…

  • Réseaux néolithiques, nomades marins et marchands dans les petites îles de la Sonde

    Open Access•Jean‐christophe Galipaud•ARTICLE•Archipel•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 36

  • Long‐distance connections in Vanuatu

    Open Access•Jean‐christophe Galipaud, C Reepmeyer et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2014•Cited by: 18•References: 15

A geochemical study using pXRF and LA–ICP–MS to characterise artefacts from sites dating to the initial phase of colonisation on Aore and Malo islands, Vanuatu, has confirmed the dominance of obsidian from the distant Kutau/Bao source in West New Britain, with a smaller group from local outcrops in the Banks Islands, Vanuatu. Three flakes from the Umleang/Umrei source in the Admiralty Islands have also been identified in later levels. Distance fa…

  • Recherches archéologiques aux îles Torres

    Jean‐christophe Galipaud•ARTICLE•Journal de la Société des…•1998•Cited by: 3

The Torres islands which are located at the far north of the New Hebrides island arc, between the Banks islands and the Santa Cruz, had so far never been investigated archaeologically. Results obtained during several surveys from 1996 to 1998 are presented. They show that the most ancient occupation to date is characterised, as in Tikopia, by plain ware with notched rims. Lapita pottery has not been found there. These preliminary observations are…
