  • Holocene hydroclimate synthesis of the Aegean

    Open Access•Matthew J Jacobson, Joana Seguin et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2024•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 24

The Aegean region has a wealth of archeological data originating from a long and rich human history and is frequently used as a testbed for climate-society interactions at different time scales. Here, we summarize and synthesize 31 proxy records derived from lake and wetland sediments, marine sediments, and speleothems reflecting hydroclimatic conditions over the last 10,000 years in the Aegean. To enable comparison and numerical analyses, we con…

  • The Climatic Resilience of the Sasanian Empire

    Open Access•Matthew J Jacobson, Alison L Gascoigne et al.•ARTICLE•Human Ecology•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 117

The Sasanian Empire (224-651 CE) has been given relatively little attention in research on climate-society interactions when compared to the neighboring Byzantine Empire, despite evidence of changing conditions and an agricultural economy that is theoretically vulnerable to droughts due to low annual precipitation. We review the available historical, archaeological, paleo-environmental, and paleo-climatic evidence to assess whether climatic condi…

  • New Insights on the Role of Environmental Dynamics Shaping Southern Mesopotamia

Open Access•Mark Altaweel, Anke Marsh et al.•ARTICLE•Iraq•2019

Recent fieldwork and archival sedimentary materials from southern Iraq have revealed new insights into the environment that shaped southern Mesopotamia from the pre-Ubaid (early Holocene) until the early Islamic period. These data have been combined with northern Iraqi speleothem, or stalagmite, data that have revealed relevant palaeoclimate information. The new results are investigated in light of textual sources and satellite remote sensing wor…

  • Speleothems from the Middle East

Open Access•Yuval Burstyn, Belén Martrat et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2019

The Middle East (ME) spans the transition between a temperate Mediterranean climate in the Levant to hyper-arid sub-tropical deserts in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula (AP), with the complex alpine topography in the northeast feeding the Euphrates and Tigris rivers which support life in the Southeastern Fertile Crescent (FC). Climate projections predict severe drying in several parts of the ME in response to global warming, making it i…
