Tradition, technical choice and cultural evolution
How can the gap between cultural evolutionary theory and the analysis of how tools were made by prehistoric artisans be effectively bridged? In a study of chipped stone el-Khiam points from the Pre-Pottery Neolithic A in the Levant, we integrate concepts of technological choice with approaches from cultural evolution to explore prehistoric learning environments and pathways of cultural transmission. The results of an attribute analysis of points …
Not business as usual” – a tale of critical participatory action research and the extended case method
Purpose This paper outlines the approach of critical participatory action research (CPAR) and the extended case method (ECM) within an applied research context. The context for the research example explored is set within employee ownership. Design/methodology/approach CPAR is at the heart of this paper. The ECM is applied to underpin the approaches adopted. The approach to managing data is qualitative. Findings A journey of originality is present…
Using the planning system to promote a healthier food environment
Local authorities are using their planning powers to manage hot food takeaways. The use of these powers is mediated by the Planning Inspectorate. A case-study approach was adopted to understand outcomes of takeaways policy and decision after the statutory policy examination and appeal stages. Eight case studies in England were selected and a documentary analysis was undertaken to determine how public health issues were considered by inspectors. T…
Reporting the whole story
OBJECTIVE: We conducted a UK-wide survey to identify the top 10 research questions for young people's cancer. We conducted secondary analysis of questions submitted, which were 'out-of-scope' of the original survey aim. We sought to disseminate these questions, to inform practice, policy and the development of potential interventions to support young people with cancer. DESIGN: James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnership. PARTICIPANTS: Young…
Dating WF16
A pre-requisite for understanding the transition to the Neolithic in the Levant is the establishment of a robust chronology, most notably for the late Epi-Palaeolithic and Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA) periods. In this contribution we undertake a dating analysis of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic site of WF16, southern Jordan, drawing on a sample of 46 AMS 14 C dates. We utilise Bayesian methods to quantify an old wood effect to provide an offset that…
Further diversity in the Early Neolithic of the Southern Levant
Should social care staff be Facebook friends with the people they support
Purpose – Local policies often prohibit care staff from online contact with the people they support. The purpose of this paper is to review the reasons put forward for this ban and seek explanations. Design/methodology/approach – The paper examines relevant literature on the use of social networking by disabled and nondisabled people. This paper offers a critique of common policies and justifications and poses a challenge to those who impose such…
Croig Cave
Activity within caves provides an important element of the later prehistoric and historic settlement pattern of western Scotland. This contribution reports on a small-scale excavation within Croig Cave, on the coast of north-west Mull, that exposed a 1.95 m sequence of midden deposits and cave floors that date between c 1700 BC and AD 1400. Midden analysis indicated the processing of a diverse range of small fish and the collection of shellfish t…
On the Edge
The broad picture of the cultural and chronological succession from the Epipalaeolithic to the Neolithic in the southern Levant is generally well understood. However, at a more detailed, local level, many questions remain unanswered. In this paper we examine the archaeological record of cultural developments in southern Jordan and the Negev. Focusing on a series of 14C dates from the early occupation of the PPNA site of WF16, we provide a critica…
New Evidence from Southern Jordan
The development of architecture and settlement is central to discussions concerning the Neolithic transformation as the very visible evidence for the changes in society that run parallel to the domestication of plants and animals. Architecture has been used as an important aspect of models of how the transformation occurred, and as evidence for the sharp difference between huntergatherer and farming societies. We suggest that the emerging evidenc…
An 11 600 year-old communal structure from the Neolithic of southern Jordan
The authors present a new type of communal and monumental structure from the earliest Neolithic in western Asia. A complement to the decorated stone pillars erected at Göbekli Tepe in the north, 'Wadi Faynan 16 Structure O75' in the southern Levant is a ritualised gathering place of a different kind. It serves to define wider western Asia as an arena of social experiment in the tenth millennium BC, one in which community seems to take precedence …
Dhra', Excavation Project, 2002 Interim Report
This is an interim report on the second season of fieldwork and post-excavation analysis on the Pottery Neolithic and Pre-Pottery Neolithic site of Dhra', near the southern end of the Dead Sea in Jordan. Excavations to date have produced rich assemblages of pottery and lithics. In addition sets of features that can be attributed to each phase have been identified. Those from the PPNA are generally better preserved than those of the Pottery Neolit…
