This is a theoretical and ethnographic essay on sexuality and the social order using the Bara material as a vehicle for demonstrating important universal features of human social life. In this sense the style of exposition and organization is modeled after some of the famous essays of the Année sociologique on issues such as bodily polarity, secondary burial, and seasonal variations, all of which drew on limited ethnographic material to pursue ge…

Ancient Malagasy Dynastic Succession; The Merina Example
My paper dealing with the Andriambahoaka universal sovereigns and the Indonesian heritage that they embodied brought out the eminently religious character of the Malagasy marvelous tales, disarticulated fragments from a Malay myth of origin. As Françoise Raison has noted, the religious value of Ibonia was still perfectly felt in Imerina during the first half of the nineteenth century. I do not hark back to the possibilities offered by the notion …

The early cultural history of Madagascar, inseparable from that of the Indian Ocean, remains very poorly known. I agree with other authors that the peopling of the island is recent; so far we do not have any archeological evidence dating prior to the ninth century. While it is beyond doubt that the islands received people, techniques, and ideas from all the areas around the Indian Ocean, recent work confirms the dominance of a double--or rather a…
