Maternal Employment and Children's Cognitive Ability in a Gender-Inegalitarian Society
Maternal employment in regular full-time work is negatively associated with children's cognitive performance in Japan. The negative association is limited to the employment of mothers with a high school education or less. Mothers' nonstandard employment is unrelated to children's cognitive performance. Analyses examine children's cumulative exposure to mothers' employment. The estimation of marginal structural models facilitates causal inference.

Exercise training promotes neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus with a particular focus on cell cycle regulation
Adult neurogenesis is predominantly restricted to two neurogenic regions in the mammalian brain: the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricle and the subgranular zone (SGZ) of the dentate gyrus (DG) within the hippocampus. The hippocampus serves as a critical brain structure involved in learning and memory processes, and the continuous generation of new neurons contributes to enhanced synaptic plasticity. Accumulating evidence has demon…

Methods Following forward–backward translation and expert review, the Chin…
The Construction and Application of a Case-Based Learning Method in a Small Class of Undergraduates on a Psychotherapy Course
Psychotherapy is a central part of the undergraduate clinical psychology curriculum, with a high degree of clinical practice, which is the most prominent issue lacking in traditional teaching. Case-based learning (CBL) is an instructional approach in which instructors select representative cases that align with learning objectives and use them to organize activities that may not only impart theoretical knowledge but also practical skills to under…
Family Dysfunction and Problematic Media Use Among Chinese Preschool Children
Family dynamics play an important role in shaping young children’s media use behaviors, with family dysfunction linked to problematic media use. However, very few studies, particularly using longitudinal designs, have attempted to explore the mechanisms underlying this relationship among preschool children. Drawing upon the Process-Person-Context-Time model and the Interactional Theory of Childhood Problematic Media Use, this study incorporated p…
Synergistic Effects of Organic Materials and Clay on Maize Yield and Water Use Efficiency in Sandy Soil
Most physicochemical properties of soil organic matter (SOM) enhancement are related to soil structure. In poorly structured sandy soil, modifying the mechanical composition may be a prerequisite for effective SOM management and crop yield improvement. This study investigated the effects of organic materials and introduced clay (Quaternary red clay soil with 38.5% clay) on soil water dynamics, maize growth, root morphology, and water use efficien…
Increasingly separate spheres? The changing state gender discourse in China from 1990 to 2023
This study examines how state gender discourse in China has evolved over the past three decades, with a focus on how official narratives construct women’s roles in the public and private spheres. Although research has documented a resurgence of traditional gender ideology and worsening gender inequality in post-reform China, less is known about how state-controlled media have framed womanhood over time. Using computational text analysis on 125,53…

The results indicate that improvements in ordinary capabilities (e.g., technical and m…
Leaving Again? Job Quality and Repeat Internal Migration in China
Research on internal migration has paid limited attention to how job quality influences repeat migration. We theorize three possible scenarios where job quality may exert a dampening, facilitating, or null effect on repeat migration, a complex process contingent on gender and educational attainment. Using longitudinal data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), we construct comprehensive measures of objective and subjective job quality and a…

Effects of Microhabitat on Seedling Recruitment of the Pioneer Shrub Pyracantha fortuneana in Subtropical Rocky Outcrop‐Rich Areas
Human activities have led to widespread bedrock exposure and vegetation degradation in subtropical karst ecosystems. In these degraded landscapes, the effects of fragmented rock‐soil microhabitats on species regeneration remain poorly understood, particularly in terms of their influence on seedling recruitment. We hypothesized that variations in rocky microhabitats impact seedling establishment by modifying hydrothermal micro‐conditions, thereby …

The Variable Disadvantage of Nonstandard Employment for Entering Homeownership in Russia and Urban China
Nonstandard employment (NSE) is a disadvantage for entry into homeownership because it is associated with both lower average income and greater uncertainty of future income. These features of NSE make formal mortgage loans from banks riskier to take on and harder to obtain. This mechanism implies that the relative disadvantage of NSE for homeownership entry is greater in societies where, due to institutional and macro-economic factors, mortgages …
