The University Sector Has Become More Application‐Oriented
In this article, we analyse changes in the language use to describe the content of higher education in Denmark between 2014 and 2021. Based on text analysis of course descriptions of every university course in Denmark, we show steady growth in the use of applied, practical and vocationally oriented terminology. This trend is not only driven by a transformation towards more applied fields within higher education, but also directly affects courses …
Parental unemployment and children's well-being at school
We examine the effect of parental unemployment on the school well-being of children aged 6 to 9 while considering differential effects by unemployment duration, reemployment, and parents' socioeconomic status. The analysis is based on a mandatory school well-being survey, which is answered by the children and conducted annually in Danish public schools (2014-2019) and linked to administrative register data. A child-level fixed effect model is use…
The Effects of Co-Teaching and Related Collaborative Models of Instruction on Student Achievement
Co-teaching and related collaborative models of instruction are widely used in primary and secondary schools in many school systems. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of such models on students’ academic achievement and how these effects are moderated by factors of theoretical and practical relevance. Although previous research and reviews have asserted that the evidence base is scarce, we found 128 treatment and c…
Parental job loss and the role of unemployment duration and income changes for children's education
This article studies the impact of parental job loss, subsequent unemployment duration, and income changes on the results of the final exam in lower secondary education and on the decision to pursue an academic track in Denmark. Drawing on administrative register data we use sibling fixed effects models as well as a before-after-test design to investigate the shorter-term effects of parental job loss. The results show that there are hardly any ef…

Social Inequalities in Student Employment and the Local Labour Market
This article examines class-specific employment patterns among students in Germany, taking into account how different local labour market conditions affect the quantity and quality of jobs available to students. We argue that the availability of jobs affects social inequalities in student employment. In particular, we expect a stronger correlation between, on the one hand, the rate and quality of student employment and, on the other hand, student…
Saving Some Inequality for Young Adulthood? Social Origin Differences in ‘Re’-enrollment in Postsecondary Education in the United States, Sweden, and Germany
In this article, three country contexts are compared with regard to inequality by social origin in late enrollment in post-secondary education. Countries differ in the frequency at which young adults leave the labor market and (re)-enroll. This article discusses how inequality in late entry into education by social origin can be linked to characteristics of the education system and the labor market. Two cases with education systems that welcome a…
A Transition without Tradition
EMI in Germany
This article discusses effectively maintained inequality considering two different examples from the Germany education system: secondary school attainment and enrolment in highly ranked universities among freshmen. In our analyses of secondary school attainment, we investigate whether considering differentiation in upper secondary education leads to other conclusions than restricting the analyses to the conventional distinction between the tradit…

University Rankings as a New Criterion of Social Inequality in Higher Education
The effects of work experience during higher education on labour market entry
Graduates from higher education often enter the labour market with a considerable amount of work experience. Using German data, we address the question of whether early work experience pays off upon labour market entry. We compare the labour market benefits of different types of work experience. This comparison allows us to more generally test hypotheses about different explanations of why education pays off. Results indicate that tertiary gradua…
Class origin and young adults’ re-enrollment
Explaining the class gap in training
Existing studies consistently find a gap in further education between high‐ and low‐skilled workers, implying a gap in formal training between high‐ and low‐skilled classes. In this paper, we hypothesize that the most important reasons for differences between social classes in further education participation are grounded in job characteristics rather than worker characteristics. This is in line with theoretical foundations of the construction of …
Is forcing them worth the effort? Benefits of mandatory internships for graduates from diverse family backgrounds at labour market entry
Mandatory internships are implemented in higher education curricula in order to ease the labour market integration of graduates. This article evaluates the utility of mandatory internships in Germany by assessing the effect on graduates' transition from higher education to work. The authors examine whether these compulsory programmes provide extra benefits for graduates from families with lower educational backgrounds. Three different outcome var…
