  • The Population Education Transition Curve

    Open Access•David P Baker, William C Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2017•Cited by: 12•References: 57

The salutary effect of formal education on health-risk behaviors and mortality is extensively documented: ceteris paribus, greater educational attainment leads to healthier lives and longevity. Even though the epidemiological evidence has strongly indicated formal education as a leading “social vaccine,” there is intermittent reporting of counter-education gradients for health-risk behavior and associated outcomes for certain populations during s…

  • Education, Skills, and Wage Gaps in Canada and the United States

    Open Access•William C Smith, F Fernandez•ARTICLE•International Migration•2017•Cited by: 14•References: 4

We analyse data from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies to reveal that immigrants in Canada and the United States make over $200 less per month than native‐born workers. In the United States, immigrants disproportionately work in low‐wage occupations, leading to large mean national differences between immigrants and native workers. The wage differential disappears after accounting for education and cognitive skil…

    Open Access•William C Smith•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 22

The field of Latin American politics has undeniably achieved major advances in the last several decades. Nevertheless, one detects a growing intellectual unease and a sense that the excitement engendered by the pathbreaking work and heated debates of previous decades-focusing on authoritarianism, democratization, and market restructuring and related structural transformations-has waned and perhaps given way to a certain "normalization" of our int…

  • Physical activity attitudes, intentions and behaviour among 18–25 year olds

Open Access•Amudha Poobalan, Amudha S Poobalan et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

18-25 year olds are a difficult group to reach and have low levels of PA. Factors such as, 'enjoyment', 'appearance 'and 'feeling good' were deemed important by this specific age group. A targeted intervention incorporating these crucial elements should be developed to improve and sustain PA levels

  • Los ejes de la tercera vía en América Latina

    Open Access•Roberto Patricio Korzeniewicz, William C Smith•ARTICLE•AMÉRICA LATINA HOY•2009

    Open Access•William C Smith, Roberto Patricio Korzeniewicz•ARTICLE•Colombia Internacional•2006

The Summit process in the Americas and the complex negotiations around the FTAA are specific manifestations, at a regional level, of broader transformations in the international politics and the world-economy. But in a “double movement,” the global expansion of markets has simultaneously generated pressures that seek a social and political regulation of those markets. Thus, regional networks and coalitions and, in some cases, transnational social…

  • Poverty, Inequality, and Growth in Latin America

Open Access•Roberto Patricio Korzeniewicz, William C Smith•ARTICLE•Latin American Research Review•2000

This article revisits debates concerning poverty, inequality, and development in Latin America and explores a possible “high road” to globalization capable of achieving both more rapid economic growth and significant and lasting reductions in poverty and inequality. In reconnoitering the contours of this path, the authors probe a partial convergence in theory, concepts, and policies that may offer new opportunities for bridging the yawning chasms…

  • Democracy, Distributional Conflicts and Macroeconomic Policymaking in Argentina, 1983-89

    Open Access•William C Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Interamerican Studies…•1990•Cited by: 16•References: 5

In December 1983, when Raúl Alfonsín and his Radical party assumed responsibility for Argentina's transition from authoritarian dictatorship to democracy, the economy was mired in deep crisis. Rather than a repetition of the familiar "stop-go" cycles of previous decades, the mid-1980s crisis was more structural in nature, stemming from a perverse logic deeply rooted in contemporary Argentine capitalism. Few Argentines, regardless of ideological p…

    Open Access•William C Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Interamerican Studies…•1991•Cited by: 12•References: 11

Argentines Fervently hoped that the transition from authoritarianism to democracy would reverse decades of economic decline and return their country to the path of modernization. Raúl Alfonsín and his Radical party assumed office in December 1983 confident of reconciling democratization with rapid development and social justice. This optimism was soon shattered, the victim of a succession of failed stabilization plans. Finally, a catastrophic eco…

    Open Access•Jennifer L Mccoy, Jennifer Mccoy et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Interamerican Studies…•1995•Cited by: 6•References: 25

Venezuela's contemporary politics poses a problematic different from those predominating in the literature on democratization. Scholarly research in the last decade focused first on the crisis of authoritarian rule and the ensuingtransitionto civilian governments, with the reestablishment of electoral procedures, and, more recently, on the problems of theconsolidationof a democratic regime, including alternation in power, universal acceptance of …

  • The Hybrid in Hawaii as a Marginal Man

    William C Smith•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1934•Cited by: 6

Several factors conspire to make the hybrid in Hawaii occupy a position markedly different from that of the mixed-blood in other areas. The relative absence of race prejudice on the part of the Hawaiians has created an atmosphere which is favorable both to intermarriage and to persons of mixed blood. There are certain differences between the several groups. The Chinese-Hawaiian is by consensus, a superior product and is accorded a high status. Th…

  • Coronary heart disease and water hardness in Scotland--is there a relationship

    William C Smith, I K Crombie•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1987•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Scotland has a mortality rate from coronary disease which is one of the highest in the world. There is also a considerable variation in this mortality rate within Scotland. Data on water hardness throughout Scotland have been collected from Regional Water Authorities to see whether variations in coronary mortality rates can be explained by variations in water hardness. Analysis demonstrates a much weaker negative association than has been demonst…

    Open Access•William C Smith•ARTICLE•Journal of Interamerican Studies…•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 4

On March 15,1987, Brazil celebrated the second anniversary of the Nova República, the popular term for the new civilian government headed by José Sarney. While commemoration of the return to more open, competitive politics after 21 years of authoritarian rule is certainly cause for justifiable national pride, a worsening economic crisis combined with escalating domestic social and political conflict leave many Brazilians deeply worried about the …

The behavior of the American-born Orientals differs markedly from that of their immigrant parents. This is not due to biological causes, even though bodily changes have been observed. Cultural factors are responsible for the differences, and doubtless the changes in the oriental family in America are the most important. Life on the sugar plantations of Hawaii has broken down old customs and standards. The young people are eager to follow the patt…

    William C Smith•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1927

There is a different between the characteristics socio-psychic traits of rural and urban dwellers. The causes of these differences may be considered from four points of view: (1) selection, (2) isolation, (3) domestication, and (4) occupation. The occupational activities are fundamental in the development of attitudes, and, since rural occupational conditions are so far different from those of the city, the differences between the two groups may …
