Farm establishment, abandonment and agricultural practices during the last 1,300 years
Anthropogenic and climatic impacts on a coastal environment in the Baltic Sea over the last 1000 years
The effect of local land-use changes on floristic diversity during the past 1000 years in southern Sweden
The relationship between land-use and floristic diversity in the landscape, for the last millennia, is analysed from two small lakes in southern Sweden. Pollen analysis and the Local Vegetation Estimates (LOVE) model are used to quantify land-cover at local scales with 100-year time windows. Floristic richness is estimated using palynological richness, and we introduce LOVE-based evenness as a proxy for floristic evenness on a local scale based o…
Pollen‐based quantitative reconstructions of Holocene regional vegetation cover (plant‐functional types and land‐cover types) in Europe suitable for climate modelling
We present quantitative reconstructions of regional vegetation cover in north‐western Europe, western Europe north of the Alps, and eastern Europe for five time windows in the Holocene [around 6k, 3k, 0.5k, 0.2k, and 0.05k calendar years before present ( bp )] at a 1° × 1° spatial scale with the objective of producing vegetation descriptions suitable for climate modelling. The REVEALS model was applied on 636 pollen records from lakes and bogs to…
Two hundred years of land-use change in the South Swedish Uplands
From landscape description to quantification
The development since the beginning of the 20th century of the pollen-analytical theory and method as a palaeoecological tool for describing landscape development is outlined with reference to southern Scandinavia. Numerical methods applied since the 1980s are discussed. The aim of this paper is to provide a new perspective on the landscape development and human impact during the Holocene by applying the Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance…
Testing the effect of site selection and parameter setting on Reveals-model estimates of plant abundance using the Czech Quaternary Palynological Database
Floristic diversity in the transition from traditional to modern land-use in southern Sweden a.d. 1800–2008
We aim to provide a long-term ecological analysis of land-use and floristic diversity in the transition from traditional to modern land-use management in the time a.d. 1800–2008 in southern Sweden. We use the Regional Estimates of Vegetation Abundance from Large Sites (REVEALS) model to quantify land-cover changes on a regional scale at 20-year intervals, based on the fossil pollen record. Floristic richness and evenness are estimated using palyn…
Holocene land-cover reconstructions for studies on land cover-climate feedbacks
The major objectives of this paper are: (1) to review the pros and cons of the scenarios of past anthropogenic land cover change (ALCC) developed during the last ten years, (2) to discuss issues related to pollen-based reconstruction of the past land-cover and introduce a new method, REVEALS (Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites), to infer long-term records of past land-cover from pollen data, (3) to present a new project (…
The Reveals model, a new tool to estimate past regional plant abundance from pollen data in large lakes
The REVEALS model was developed to reconstruct quantitatively regional vegetation abundance (in a 10 4 –10 5 km 2 area) from pollen assemblages in large lakes (≥100–500 ha). This model corrects for biases in pollen percentages caused by inter‐taxonomic differences in pollen productivity and dispersal. This paper presents the first case study to validate REVEALS, using empirical data from southern Sweden. Percentage cover of modern regional vegeta…
Pollen productivity estimates of key European plant taxa for quantitative reconstruction of past vegetation
The use of modelling and simulation approach in reconstructing past landscapes from fossil pollen data
Effects of the sampling design and selection of parameter values on pollen-based quantitative reconstructions of regional vegetation
Pollen productivity estimates and relevant source area of pollen for selected plant taxa in a pasture woodland landscape of the Jura Mountains (Switzerland)
Estimating the spatial scale of pollen dispersal in the cultural landscape of southern Sweden
The primary aim of the study was to estimate the spatial scale of pollen dispersal and deposition for pollen assemblages from moss polsters in the cultivated landscape of southern Sweden, as a mean to improve future studies of the pollen/vegetation relationship in the region, and interpretation of fossil pollen data in terms of past cultural landscapes. This can be done by estimating the ‘relevant source area of pollen’ (RSAP) defined as the area…
Vegetation structure and pollen source area
In this paper we use a simulation approach to explore the effect of variation in taxon parameters and landscape patterning on relevant source area of pollen. We use the Prentice-Sugita model, assume constant atmospheric conditions and basin morphology, and take a reductionist approach to explore the behaviour of pollen dispersal and deposition in a simple landscape scenario. Individual factors within the scenario (pollen fall speed, relative poll…
Pollen productivity estimates for the reconstruction of past vegetation cover in the cultural landscape of southern Sweden
Pollen productivity estimates (PPE) are one of the critical parameters for a quantitative recon struction of past vegetation from fossil pollen records. Modern pollen and vegetation data were collected in traditional landscapes of southern Sweden to derive PPE for the most characteristic plant taxa. The 42 selected sites are assumed to be good analogues of historical to prehistorical grasslands. A sampling method of vegetation, designed to produc…
Landscape openness and pollen records
Quantitative reconstruction of the area cleared of forest in the past is essential to assess the possible indirect anthropogenic impacts on the past environment of Europe, including past climate. We apply a simul ation model of pollen dispersal and deposition (1) to re-examine the relationship between pollen and landscape openness, often uncritically inferred from non-arboreal pollen (NAP) percentages alone, and (2) to predict the relevant source…
