This research explores the relationship between use of certain drugs and aggressive crimes among Mexican-American and White male arrestees in San Antonio, Texas, for 1992. This is based on a Drug Use Forecasting (DUF) sample of 534 male arrestees administered a drug urine analysis test and questionnaire by the Department of Justice and the city of San Antonio. A review of the literature on social movement organizations yields two key organizational variables: 1) the nature of the goals (instrumental-specific or expressive-diffuse); 2) the nature of membership requirements (exclusive or inclusive). This study reports the results of a test of a theory which was based on the assumption that lengths of school membership would be systematically related with adolescents' valuations of three significant others: mothers, fathers, and friends. Increasing time in school was predicted to be associated with decreasing valuations of parents and increasing valuations of friends with the exception of the last school year when anticipated change of settin…
The Issue of Schools as Social Systems
The critical limitation of the interpretation of schools as independent normative systems is the failure to demonstrate that observed student orientations are acquired in schools rather than in other settings such as the home or community. The problem is approached here as a question of whether students' orientations vary with lengths of membership in the same school organization. Voluntary Associations and the Social Integration of the Poor
Studies of membership in voluntary associations clearly reflect a low likelihood of affiliation among low income persons, especially those at the poverty level. Lower-class interaction patterns are found to be largely contained in the local, relatively intimate settings of the family and immediate neighborhood, or, in the case of organizations, with those which maintain more of an affective than a utilitarian orientation.
