  • How Follow-Up Counselling Increases Linkage to Care Among HIV-Positive Persons Identified Through Home-Based HIV Counselling and Testing

Open Access•Dominic Bukenya, Janet Seeley et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2020

We investigated how follow-up counselling had increased linkage to HIV care in a trial of referral to care and follow-up counseling, compared to referral to care only, for participants diagnosed as HIV-positive through home-based HIV counseling and testing. We carried out a cross-sectional qualitative study. Using random stratified sampling, we selected 43 trial participants (26 [60%] in the intervention arm). Sample stratification was by sex, di…

  • Understanding kidney disease in rural central Uganda – Findings from a qualitative study

Open Access•Janet Seeley, Elizabeth Kabunga et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2020

As part of a multicentre study on kidney disease (ARK) undertaken in Malawi, South Africa and Uganda we undertook a social science component in Uganda to gather information on people's understandings and perceptions of a diagnosis of kidney dysfunction, treatment and treatment seeking. We recruited 46 people who had been given information about kidney dysfunction and had been found to have some, usually early, signs of mild impairment. Data were …

  • Conducting in-depth interviews with and without voice recorders

    Open Access•Rwamahe Rutakumwa, Joseph Mugisha et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research•2020•Citada por: 29•Referencias: 21

The use of audio recordings has become a taken-for-granted approach to generating transcripts of in-depth interviewing and group discussions. In this paper we begin by describing circumstances where the use of a recorder is not, or may not be, possible, before sharing our comparative analysis of audio-recorded transcriptions and interview scripts made from notes taken during the interview (by experienced, well-trained interviewers). Our compariso…

  • For us here, we remind ourselves”

Open Access•Enid Schatz, Janet Seeley et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

These barriers were similar to those outlined for younger populations in other studies, but were compounded by age. Despite barriers, either due to the exceptional nature of HIV care or overreporting, both ART access and self-reported adherence were better than expected. Older persons living with HIV highlighted health care needs for non-HIV-related illnesses, suggesting while HIV care is adequate, care for the ailments of "old age" is lagging

  • This is where we buried our sons’

    Open Access•Janet Seeley, Brent Wolff et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2009•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 23

Much research on the impact of HIV and AIDS on older people fails to differentiate between age groups, and treats those aged from 50 years to the highest ages as homogeneous. The ‘oldest old’ or those aged over 75 years may be particularly vulnerable through declining health and independence as a result of the AIDS epidemic, which has forced some to take on roles that younger relatives would have performed had they lived. In this paper we describ…
