Economics and Sociology
After Piketty
Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the Twenty-First Century is the most widely discussed work of economics in recent history, selling millions of copies in dozens of languages. But are its analyses of inequality and economic growth on target? Where should researchers go from here in exploring the ideas Piketty pushed to the forefront of global conversation? A cast of economists and other social scientists tackle these questions in dialogue with Piketty,…

Deterrence, Criminal Opportunities, and Police
In this article, we join three distinct literatures on crime control—the deterrence literature, the policing literature as it relates to crime control, and the environmental and opportunity perspectives literature. Based on empirical findings and theory from these literatures, we pose a mathematical model of the distribution of criminal opportunities and offender decision making on which of those opportunities to victimize. Criminal opportunities…

Does Growth Have a Future? Does Growth Theory Have a Future? Are These Questions Related
This essay explores the intertwined futures of economic growth and growth theory. Solow argues that while the limits to growth on a finite planet are undeniable, the nature and timing of these limits remain uncertain. He suggests that focusing solely on physical limits overlooks the potential for technological innovation and substitution. Regarding growth theory, he advocates for a shift away from abstract models towards a more empirically ground…

How did economics get that way & what way did it get
pline began in September 1940 when I enrolled as a freshman in the elementary economics course at Harvard College. I will try in this essay to make sense of the evolution of economics over a span of more than 1⁄2fty years. An analogy that comes to mind is from The Boston Globe. The Sunday edition occasionally publishes pairs of photographs of urban landscapes. They are taken from the same spot, looking in the same direction, but are at least thir…

The Roaring Nineties
Applying Growth Theory across Countries
I am broadly in sympathy with the spirit of the article by William Brock and Steven Durlauf and that by William Easterly and Ross Levine. They are trying to move the literature in the right direction. I say this even though I have been skeptical from the beginning about the interpretation of cross-country growth regressions. The potential problem of reverse causality has been obvious to everyone. It has usually been met with the standard economet…
International Productivity Comparisons Built from the Firm Level
International productivity comparisons can be built up with micro and macro data. Studies of firms or groups of firms producing similar outputs reveal the deeper causes of differences in productivity across countries. The studies find that such differences often depend on patterns of organization within firms, the motivations of managers and the like. The intensity of domestic and international competition can have a large impact on productivity.…

Toward a Macroeconomics of the Medium Run
T hese days macroeconomics has become more respectable than it used tobe. I can remember when many economists liked to say: Microeconomicsis not problematic, but I just don’t understand macroeconomics. There was a definite implication that something must be wrong with macroeconomics, not with the observer. Of course macroeconomics cannot be “exact; ” it has to work by rough analogy and empirical compromise. Maybe a certain raffishness is inevitab…

Perspectives on Growth Theory
This essay relates recent developments in growth theory to problems and ideas that first engaged R. F. Harrod, E. Domar, and their neoclassical successors. The body of 'new growth theory' began by finding special ways to assume that there are constant returns to capital. It is shown that this is a very nonrobust assumption, thus not a good basis for growth theory. More promising is the attempt to create a genuinely endogenous theory of the proces…

The Consequences of Economic Rhetoric
The field of economics proves to be a matter of metaphor and storytelling - its mathematics is metaphoric and its policy-making is narrative. Economists have begun to realize this and to rethink how they speak. This volume is the result of a conference held at Wellesley College, involving both theoretical and applied economists, that explored the consequences of the rhetoric and the conversation of the field of economics.

Unemployment
In my opinion, the form and conception of this conference exemplifies the right instinct for modern macroeconomics. There is a fact, a big unmistakable unsubtle fact: essentially everywhere in the modern industrial capitalist world, unemployment rates are much higher than they used to be two or three decades ago. Why is that? If macroeconomics is good for anything, it ought to be able to understand and explain that fact. We should be able to prod…

VI. The Survival of Mathematical Economics
This argument would only be confused by expanding the notation into one involving separate terms and fractions involving determinants. Diagrams cannot help here and a prose translation would presumably have to cover an explanation about the inversion of matrices and the meaning of determinants.
