Scorn.

The Role of Testing and Vaccination in Mediating Social Vulnerability and Covid-19 Prevalence in Southern Nevada
The COVID-19 pandemic is a catastrophic event highlighting numerous health disparities. The social vulnerability index (SVI) has been widely utilized in COVID-19 research to assess vulnerable communities and to examine how social determinants influence various COVID-19 outcomes. This population-based study aims to determine whether COVID-19 testing and vaccination rates mediate the relationship between the SVI and COVID-19 prevalence. Mediation a…
How Anti-Immigrant Policies Impact Research Among Latinx and Undocumented People Who Use Drugs
Since January 2025, anti-immigrant policies, criminalization, and xenophobic rhetoric have rapidly intensified, threatening the health and well-being of Latinx communities. Under new executive orders, funding and research related to racial health disparities and equity is being scaled back or halted. The negative effects of immigration enforcement on the health of Latinx communities have been well documented. Less is known about how the implement…
Methodological Lessons Learned From a Longitudinal Study of Overdose Vulnerability Among People Experiencing Homelessness Who Co-use Fentanyl and Stimulants in San Francisco, CA, USA
The U.S. overdose crisis is now driven by polysubstance use involving fentanyl and stimulants. We received funding through the National Institutes on Drug Abuse’s Helping to End Addiction Long-Term (HEAL) initiative to conduct longitudinal qualitative research on polysubstance use among people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in San Francisco, California. An Intersectional Risk Environment Framework was used to examine the interaction between soci…
Rasquache vulnerability and theories of the flesh
In this article, I blend authoethnography and ethnography to activate a Chicanx feminist theory of the flesh, which is grounded in the sensibilities of vulnerability and rasquachismo. Rasquachismo is a politicized Mexican American visceral modality of being in the world-in art, in politics, in everydayness-that is rooted in purposeful defiance and historical hybridity. I apply this framework in conjunction with Weheliye's theory of enfleshment to…
Adverse childhood experiences and first-time homelessness among a community sample of sexual and gender minority adults
Sexual and gender minorities (SGM; i.e. lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and other identities aka LGBTQIA+) experience homelessness at disproportionately higher rates than their cisgender and heterosexual peers. Adverse childhood experiences (ACE)—experiences of abuse, neglect, or challenges in the family setting—have been identified as a key risk factor for experiencing homelessness. The present study assessed the re…
Cannabis-assisted psychotherapy for complex dissociative posttraumatic stress disorder
There is urgency to identify treatments for D-PTSD. The present case, while inherently limited, underscores the potential of CAP as a therapeutic option, leading to robust and sustained improvement. Subjective effects were comparable to those produced by classic and non-classic psychedelics, such as psilocybin and ketamine. Further research is warranted to explore, establish, and optimize CAP in D-PTSD, and to characterize its role in the pharmac…
Mental Health and Substance Misuse Indicators Associated with First-Time Homelessness among a Community Sample of Sexual and Gender Minority Adults
Homelessness is a priority public health issue in the United States (U.S.) given its strong associations with multiple adverse health outcomes. While overall rates of homelessness have decreased over the last decade, some populations-such as sexual and gender minorities-have not seen equitable decreases. The present study explores the relationship between experiences of first-time homelessness with substance misuse (assessed via the DAST-10) and …
Physico-Chemical and Microbiological Control of the Composting Process of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste
The aim of this work was to carry out a pilot experiment to monitor OFMSW (organic fraction of municipal solid waste) composting processes using different types of installations (automatic reactor, aerated static pile and turned pile). To carry out the process, pruning waste was used as structuring material (SM), in a 1:1 and 1:2, v : v , OFMSW:SM ratio. Monitoring was carried out through the control of physico-chemical and microbiological parame…
HIV Stigma Mechanisms Scale
Understanding Racial Inequities in the Implementation of Harm Reduction Initiatives
Objectives. To elucidate a structurally oriented theoretical framework that considers legacies of racism, trauma, and social exclusion and to interrogate the “unmet obligations” of the institutionalization of the harm reduction infrastructure to provide equitable protections to Black and Latinx people who use drugs (PWUD) in Maryland. Methods. In 2019, we conducted a rapid ethnographic assessment of and qualitative interviews with PWUD (n = 72) a…

Study of Evolution of Microbiological Properties in Sewage Sludge-Amended Soils
Large amounts of sewage sludge are generated in urban wastewater treatment plants and used as fertilizer in agriculture due to its characteristics. They can contain contaminants such as heavy metals and pathogenic microorganisms. The objective of this research work is to study, in real conditions, the evolution of microbial concentration in agricultural soils fertilized by biologically treated sewage sludge. The sludge (6.25 tons Ha -1 ) was appl…
Necropolitics in the "Compassionate" City
In San Francisco in the United States, the urban precariat is governed simultaneously by two logics of intervention that are highly contradictory: compassion and brutality. In this article, I explore the contours of violence embedded in humanitarian governance for unstably housed/homeless women who use drugs as they navigate care systems for their health and well-being. I use Mbembe's concept of necropolitics to examine how women embody an antici…
Structural Vulnerability and Supplemental Security Income
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a United States federal welfare program examined here as emblematic of the sociostructural configurations of welfare-related deservingness and punitive governance within social welfare. We operationalize Quesada, Hart, and Bourgois' (2011) framework of structural vulnerability to ethnographically examine people's experience with applying for and receiving SSI in the context of a mixed-method intervention stud…

Spatial Analysis of HIV Positive Injection Drug Users in San Francisco, 1987 to 2005
Spatial analyses of HIV/AIDS related outcomes are growing in popularity as a tool to understand geographic changes in the epidemic and inform the effectiveness of community-based prevention and treatment programs. The Urban Health Study was a serial, cross-sectional epidemiological study of injection drug users (IDUs) in San Francisco between 1987 and 2005 (N = 29,914). HIV testing was conducted for every participant. Participant residence was ge…

Adolescent Propensity to Engage in Health Risky Behaviors
In this paper we create indices of resilience to identify adolescents at risk of smoking, drinking alcohol, and using illegal drugs. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, three manifestations of resilience were identified: overall-resilience, self/family-resilience, and self-resilience. Our analysis reveals that the overall-resilient were less likely to engage in risky behaviors. The self/family resilient were more…
Food Insecurity and Glycemic Control Among Low-Income Patients With Type 2 Diabetes
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether food insecurity--the inability to reliably afford safe and nutritious food--is associated with poor glycemic control and whether this association is mediated by difficulty following a healthy diet, diabetes self-efficacy, or emotional distress related to diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We used multivariable regression models to examine the association between food insecurity and poor glycemic control using a…
