  • History of luminescence dating from an instrumentation perspective

    Open Access•Olav B Lian, Nigel A Spooner et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2026

Luminescence dating has developed over the last ∼60 years as a powerful technique for placing environmental and anthropogenic change into a secure temporal framework. However, over time, many have forgotten, or were never introduced to, the history of how of the method developed, particularly the role of unique instruments built in-house that enabled key methodological advances. In this paper we provide a concise history of the technique’s evolut…

  • Canal Mounds as Archives for Human-Environment Interactions in the South Caucasus during Late Antiquity

    Open Access•Lisa Snape, Lisa M Snape et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2025•References: 5

  • Luminescence dating of qanat technology

    Open Access•I K Bailiff, Nathan R Jankowski et al.•ARTICLE•Water History•2018•Cited by: 8•References: 12

With few exceptions in which dating is implied by indirect association with adjacent settlements or incorporation of diagnostic artefacts in upcast sediment, individual qanats have proven very difficult to date. This absence of a chronological framework hampers both our understanding of technology transfer, as well as the study of local settlement and landscape evolution and the temporal correlation of land use with climatic and palaeoenvironment…

  • Application of luminescence dating and geomorphological analysis to the study of landscape evolution, settlement and climate change on the Channel Island of Herm

    Open Access•I K Bailiff, C French et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 10

The optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of sands and palaeosol horizons, sampled as part of an archaeological investigation and supported by geomorphological analysis, has been applied to identify critical stages in the development of the landscape on Herm, one of the Channel Islands that lies off the coast of Guernsey, on which megalithic monuments were constructed during the Neolithic period. In particular, there were three phases of…

  • Luminescence dating of brick stupas

    Open Access•I K Bailiff, Harriet Ruth Lacey et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 11

The domed stupas are among the most distinctive of South Asia's religious monuments and have been shown to be sensitive indicators for their society. Since arguments for economic and political change depend on accurate dating, and since the stupas are largely composed of brick, the authors here assess the potential for dating building sequences by applying optically stimulated luminescence to brick fabric. As so often, good scientific dates obtai…

  • Uses and recycling of brick in medieval and Tudor English buildings

    I K Bailiff, Sophie Blain et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Journal•2010•Cited by: 9•References: 1

Luminescence dating has been applied to ceramic bricks sampled from a selection of English medieval ecclesiastical and secular buildings in Essex, Kent and Lincolnshire, ranging in age from the fourth to the late sixteenth centuries. The results obtained for the Anglo-Saxon churches, which included Brixworth, confirmed the reuse of Roman brick in all cases. The dates for the earliest medieval brick type indicate that brick making was reintroduced…

  • Prehistoric and Historic Landscape Change in Aragón, Spain

Keith Wilkinson, Christopher Gerrard et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mediterranean…•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The Moncayo Archaeological Survey (MAS) was initiated in 2000 to investigate population, economic and environmental change in a study area northwest of Zaragoza in the northeast of Spain. This is an interdisciplinary project which combines landscape archaeology with earth-science methodologies and approaches. Research undertaken during the first four field seasons has concentrated on reconstructing and explaining landscape change, while at the sa…

  • Methodological Developments in the Luminescence Dating of Brick From English Late‐medieval and Post‐medieval Buildings

    Open Access•I K Bailiff•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•2007•Cited by: 15•References: 33

Fired clay brick samples, obtained from a group of seven high‐status late‐medieval and post‐medieval buildings in England ranging in age from c. ad 1390 to 1740, were dated by the luminescence method using an optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) technique. The results obtained indicate that, when applied to quartz extracted from brick, the technique is capable of producing dates that are in consistently good agreement with independent dating e…
