Characterizing prescription opioid, heroin, and fentanyl initiation trajectories
Characterizing Trends in Synthetic Cannabinoid Receptor Agonist Use from Patient Clinical Evaluations during Medical Toxicology Consultation
Synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonists (SCRAs) are a new class of compounds with profound psychoactive effects and potential toxicity. This study characterizes patterns in SCRA abuse using qualitative interviews with individuals receiving medical toxicology consultation. Patients with suspected exposure to a new psychoactive substance were interviewed by medical toxicologists upon presentation for acute care. Investigators collected clinical and…
A Basic Bivariate Structure of Personality Attributes Evident Across Nine Languages
Here, two studies seek to characterize a parsimonious common‐denominator personality structure with optimal cross‐cultural replicability. Personality differences are observed in all human populations and cultures, but lexicons for personality attributes contain so many distinctions that parsimony is lacking. Models stipulating the most important attributes have been formulated by experts or by empirical studies drawing on experience in a very lim…
Implementing Water Pollution Policy in the United States
This article builds on a growing literature about collaborative environmental policymaking and assesses its use in relation to a major element of American water pollution policy—the total maximum daily load (TMDL) program. It extends current literature by tying collaborative policymaking to a key element of the federal Clean Water Act and by compiling information on the implementation of actions recommended in TMDL reports. We find that recommend…
Economic Models for Environmental and Business Sustainability in Product Development and Manufacturing
Modeling Sustainability in Product Development and Commercialization
In this article, the authors present the framework of a model that integrates strategic product development decisions with the product's impact on future conditions of resources and the environment. The impact of a product on stocks of nonrenewable sources and sinks is linked in a feedback loop to the cost of manufacturing and using the product and to the end-users' preference for a sustainable product. Two product development scenarios are analy…
Quantum Graphs and Their Applications
Genitive focus in Supyire
Supyire has two distinct genitive constructions, one consisting of juxtaposed nouns, and the other marked with a particle. This study demonstrates that the marked genitive correlates significantly in natural discourse with contrastive focus as operationally defined in Myhill and Xing (1996). The method used avoids the vicious circularity of many discourse-based studies of focus. Contrastive focus, rather than being "coded", is a pragmatic constru…

An essential element in planning is knowing one's target group. Today, the description of the elderly in America has changed from a portrait of a frail person preparing to die to an active person who remains involved in life and community. Using statistics, the elderly are accurately described in terms of four categories: the Active, the Transitional, the Frail, and the Caregivers. Methods of discovering the elderly within a faith group are explo…
Shooting Galleries, Dope Houses, and Injection Doctors
The social contexts in which drug injection occurs, the social roles drug injectors assume, and associated risk behaviors for infection with blood-borne pathogens remain inadequately understood. This study is based on over 10 years of ethnographic research among drug injectors in Dayton, Ohio. Specifically, fieldnotes from participant observation and semistructured interviews are used to deconstruct what constitutes a "shooting gallery" from the …
Attitudes toward Needle "Sharing" among Injection Drug Users
Ethnographers working with injection drug users in U.S. AIDS prevention projects have found that these drug users generally prefer not to use each other's needles and do not conceive of needle "sharing" (transfer) as a key dimension of their identity. To date, these findings have been based primarily on qualitative ethnographic methods. We operationalized injection drug users' values toward needle transfer and administered a questionnaire to 276 …
An Ethnographic Approach to Targeted Sampling
Recruiting large samples from "hidden populations" of injection drug and crack-cocaine users who are not in drug treatment has been a troubling methodological problem that has increased in significance in the face of the AIDS pandemic. This article describes a sampling strategy developed for AIDS prevention research in Montgomery County (Dayton) Ohio that combines targeted sampling with the systematic derivation of proportional sampling quotas. T…

Downstep in Supyire
Downstep in the vast majority of cases can be traced to the influence of a low tone [Hyman 1979]. This paper discusses the case of Supyire, a three tone language with downstep unrelated to low tone. Sequences of high tones are automatically downstepped. Confusion with mid tone is in most cases avoided by a rule which raises mid to high tone; the two rules together creating a "flip-flop" effect. Supyire also has automatic downdrift of mid and high…

Family Development in Three Generations
Family Development in Three Generations is an unusual kind of multigenerational gathering-the result of a massive, in-depth research effort. It is based upon Hill's personal interviews conducted with over 300 families during the course of a year. The discussion results from these interviews, from the statistical information that they produced, and from Hill's consultation with fi ve other fellow researchers. This scholarly contribution to the fam…
The Issue of Privacy in Public Opinion Research
The author of this paper believes that public opinion research, especially the freedom to ask questions, may be seriously curtailed unless steps are taken to explain fully and widely the social value of such enquiries, especially in the commercial field. He advocates more public service surveys as a public relations tool
