  • Detection and Characterisation of Eemian Marine Tephra Layers within the Sapropel S5 Sediments of the Aegean and Levantine Seas

Open Access•Christopher Satow, Katharine M Grant et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2020

The Eemian was the last interglacial period (~130 to 115 ka BP) to precede the current interglacial. In Eastern Mediterranean marine sediments, it is marked by a well-developed and organic-rich “sapropel” layer (S5), which is thought to reflect an intensification and northward migration of the African monsoon rain belt over orbital timescales. However, despite the importance of these sediments, very little proxy-independent stratigraphic informat…

  • A stratigraphic framework for abrupt climatic changes during the Last Glacial period based on three synchronized Greenland ice-core records

Open Access•Sune O Rasmussen, Matthias Bigler et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2014

Due to their outstanding resolution and well-constrained chronologies, Greenland ice-core records provide a master record of past climatic changes throughout the Last Interglacial–Glacial cycle in the North Atlantic region. As part of the INTIMATE (INTegration of Ice-core, MArine and TErrestrial records) project, protocols have been proposed to ensure consistent and robust correlation between different records of past climate. A key element of th…

  • The Siren Site and the Long Transition from Archaic to Late Prehistoric Lifeways on the Eastern Edwards Plateau of Central Texas

R Carpenter, Stephen Carpenter et al.•ARTICLE•Index of Texas Archaeology Open…•2013•Cited by: 1

On behalf of the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), SWCA Environmental Consultants (SWCA) conducted testing and data recovery investigations at the Siren site (41WM1126), a prehistoric multi-component site in the Interstate Highway 35 right-of-way along the South Fork of the San Gabriel River in Williamson County, Texas. The work was done to fulfill TxDOT’s compliance obligations under the National Historic Preservation Act and the Antiq…

  • Volcanic ash layers illuminate the resilience of Neanderthals and early modern humans to natural hazards

Open Access•J J Lowe, John Lowe et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2012

Marked changes in human dispersal and development during the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition have been attributed to massive volcanic eruption and/or severe climatic deterioration. We test this concept using records of volcanic ash layers of the Campanian Ignimbrite eruption dated to ca. 40,000 y ago (40 ka B.P.). The distribution of the Campanian Ignimbrite has been enhanced by the discovery of cryptotephra deposits (volcanic ash layers t…

  • Formal subdivision of the Holocene Series/Epoch

    Open Access•Mike Walker, M J C Walker et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Quaternary Science•2012

This discussion paper, by a Working Group of INTIMATE (Integration of ice‐core, marine and terrestrial records) and the Subcommision on Quaternary Stratigraphy (SQS) of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS), considers the prospects for a formal subdivision of the Holocene Series/Epoch. Although previous attempts to subdivide the Holocene have proved inconclusive, recent developments in Quaternary stratigraphy, notably the definition …

  • Formal definition and dating of the GSSP (Global Stratotype Section and Point) for the base of the Holocene using the Greenland NGRIP ice core, and selected auxiliary records

Open Access•Mike Walker, Sigfús Johnsen et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Quaternary Science•2009

The Greenland ice core from NorthGRIP (NGRIP) contains a proxy climate record across the Pleistocene–Holocene boundary of unprecedented clarity and resolution. Analysis of an array of physical and chemical parameters within the ice enables the base of the Holocene, as reflected in the first signs of climatic warming at the end of the Younger Dryas/Greenland Stadial 1 cold phase, to be located with a high degree of precision. This climatic event i…

  • Towards a Radiocarbon Chronology of the Late-Glacial

    Open Access•M J C Walker, C Bryant et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Cited by: 4•References: 26

This paper outlines a dating program designed to test the reproducibility of radiocarbon dates on different materials of Late-Glacial age (plant macrofossils, fossil beetle remains, and the “humic” and “humin” chemical fractions of limnic sediments) using a combination of radiometric (beta counting) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) techniques. The results have implications for the design of sampling strategies and for the development of im…

  • Implications for the Dating of Wisconsinan (Weichselian) Late-Glacial Events of Systematic Radiocarbon Age Differences between Terrestrial Plant Macrofossils from a Site in SW Ireland

    Open Access•Chris Turney, Chris S M Turney et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2000

AMS radiocarbon dates were obtained from Salix herbacea leaves, Carex seeds, and bulk organic detritus from a lake sediment profile of Wisconsinan (Weichselian) Lateglacial age in SW Ireland. There is a systematic age difference between the dated series from the two types of macrofossils, with ages obtained from Salix herbacea leaves being 900 to 1500 14 C years younger than those obtained from Carex seeds. The latter tend to be more in accord wi…

  • Palaeolithic Barbed Point from Gransmoor, East Yorkshire, England

    Open Access•Charles Sheldrick, J J Lowe et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1997•Cited by: 7•References: 5

An Upper Palaeolithic, uniserially barbed antler point, discovered during excavations of a Devensian Lateglacial sediment sequence in a quarry near Gransmoor, Yorkshire, England, is described. The stratigraphic context of the find is summarised, and the age of the implement can be confidently estimated to between 11,500 and 11,100 radiocarbon years BP on the basis of (i) a series of AMS radiocarbon dates, (ii) radiometric dating of the wood withi…

  • Bramcote Green, Bermondsey

    Open Access•Christopher Thomas, C David L Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1996•Cited by: 6•References: 12

An archaeological evaluation and excavation were carried out prior to a housing development in 1992, at Bramcote Green, in the London Borough of Southwark. Up to 3 m of organic rich, alluvial clay silts were deposited during the late Glacial period between about 12,000 BP and 9000 BP. A wide, shallow channel flowing south towards the Thames cut through the clay silts during the early Holocene and was filled with a series of clay and peat layers. …

  • Holocene pollen stratigraphy and human interference in the woodlands of the northern Apennines, Italy

    Open Access•J J Lowe, C Davite et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1994•Cited by: 5•References: 1

Pollen-stratigraphic data and radiocarbon dates are presented for a full Holocene series of sediment cores obtained from a high-level site in the Appennino Parmense, northern Italy. Three 'marker' horizons are identified on the basis of sediment changes and pollen stratigraphy, and the extent to which they indicate episodes of significant human interference in the local vegetation is discussed. The earliest (M1) is dated to around 6300 BP. From t…
