The association between psychological distress, alcohol use and physical non-communicable diseases in a nationally representative sample of South Africans
This study examines the associations between symptoms of mental disorders and diabetes and hypertension in a nationally representative sample of South Africans. Predictors of knowledge about tuberculosis
To reduce the burden of tuberculosis in South Africa, media campaigns targeting both rural and urban communities should include conveying accurate information about the disease. Policy makers should also address structural barriers that vulnerable communities face
Predictors of quality of life enjoyment and satisfaction in individuals living with HIV and Aids in a resource-constrained setting in South Africa
The burden of HIV disease is concentrated in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in South Africa (SA). Whilst there have been many studies conducted on the biomedical and socio-psychological aspects of HIV and AIDS, insufficient attention has been paid to the quality of life of those infected with the virus. The primary purpose of the study was to determine the predictors of quality of life enjoyment and satisfaction (Q-LES) among individuals infect…
Exploring risk and protective mechanisms associated with HIV infection among adolescents in South Africa
This study explored South African adolescents’ perceived risk and protection for HIV infection. Adolescents (N=28) with a mean age of 14.6 years receiving mental health care participated in Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to engage in an in-depth exploration of their perceived risk and protective mechanisms for HIV prevention. The data were analysed using thematic content analysis. Themes that emerged from the FGDs associated with risk for HIV inf…
Predictors of tuberculosis (TB) and antiretroviral (ARV) medication non-adherence in public primary care patients in South Africa
A comprehensive treatment programme addressing poverty, alcohol mis-use, tobacco use and psycho-social counseling is indicated for TB patients (with and without HIV). The treatment care package needs to involve not only the health sector but other relevant government sectors, such as social development

Helplessness, Depression, and Social Support Among People Being Treated for Tuberculosis in South Africa
Based on the outcome of a previous qualitative study in the same setting it was hypothesized that assessing the prevalence and severity of helplessness and depression, and the quality of social support among people with tuberculosis (TB) may provide indicators of how to provide interventions to enhance their quality of life. Building on the results of previous research it was found that among people with TB who were attending a public health clin…
Exploring Tuberculosis Patients' Adherence to Treatment Regimens and Prevention Programs at a Public Health Site
Our aim with this study was to explore the factors that contribute to tuberculosis patients' adherence and nonadherence to the Directly Observed Treatment Short Course strategy. A qualitative, phenomenological research design was used. Fifteen male and female participants between the ages of 18 and 57 years were recruited through purposive sampling at a primary care clinic located in a disadvantaged area, and in-depth interviews were conducted. The Moderating Role of Helplessness in Rheumatoid Arthritis, a Chronic Disease
The role of psychosocial factors that contribute to the maintenance of health has been conceptualized in terms of a health-sustaining function (or direct-effects hypothesis), as well as a stress-reducing function (or moderating hypothesis). This study is concerned with the stress-reducing function of helplessness on Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) health outcome. In a sample of 186 adult hospital RA patients of low socioeconomic status, helplessness me…
